Boyer or Dyna ignition?

Ok,lets open a can of worms! Which is the best ignition for my K8 ? Dyna or Boyer or CycleX ,had a Boyer in my XS650 and it never missed a beat! I hate points!cheers,Mick

as i understand it, an optical trigger is less prone to outside electrical or magnetic interference. i dont know about reliability-wise though. i had a dyna-s that lasted about 500 miles, the replacement one has been around for 6,000 or so and still working good.

It depends on where you live, buy from over there if you live over there, buy over here if you live over here.
The Boyer and Dyna are both good but by the time they are shipped cost more.

I'm nearly the same, Brit on holiday in US. I use Boyer back home and Dyna for the bike over here. ;D ;D

I use boyer until I can afford to go to Rex Caunt for a self generating ignition. Boyers have been superb for me on all my bikes. I had an optical trigger on the 350 K4 (newtronic) and it was never as clean or reliable as the Boyer....

I had a Dyan on my F1 and now have the new Cycle-X ignition in my K8 Project (both 750's). The Dyna is a bit more Plug-and-play and a bit easier to fine tune and mount. The cycle-X optical ignition takes a bit more ingenuity to get into the bike, but has some performance advantages (change your timing curve with the flip of a switch) over the Dyna.

I hate points, too.

Apparently they will- Although I've never tried it, they say that Rex's ignitions will power lights etc. The problem will be starting - you'll have to rely on the kickstarter for that.

I used Rex's ignitions on my 350 K4 racer - absolutely super product. No problem, no niggles, great service backup and no battery :-)

Sorry veer a bit off topic but this Rex Caunt system interests me (no battery). I checked out their site and I see that they make these for the 450's and smaller bikes. Is there anyone else that makes a self-sustaining system for a 550? Or could I get the 450 ignition from Rex Caunt to work?

Dont see how the 550 needs a battery to start charging as it has to feed power into the stator field coil, all the smaller bikes have permag rotors

Z1 enterprises should still be the best- don't know how that would equate if you live in Canuckistan though.

Hondaman ignition is probably the most reliable and cheapest way to go- takes all the pressure off the points and supposedly lasts a long, long time.

There are a few people here who do these sytems as they are popular in racing - gets rid of battery weight and the risk of battery flattening in a constant loss system. Elextrex world do kits you can make up for almost any bike, if it's Honda specifically, you could do worse on price and quality than going to Dave at D&Mengineering via their website www.d-mengineering.co.uk and you can even see my Bomber on their project pages with one of their ignitions installed!

I love my Hondaman ignition in my K0, magnificent piece of kit, especially if you've got a blat fattery, but my favourite is still my Martek, I've never seen a big Jap 4 idle away happily at 200 (two hundred) RPM until I installed one in a Suzuki GS750 a couple of years ago, bloody amazing! ;D

I just had a Boyer begin to fail in my bike after 4 years (erratic idle, difficulty starting, etc).

Replaced with a Hondaman EI and I couldn't be happier.  And unlike the Boyer, it has a killer warranty if it ever does fail.

Yeah, the Boyers never really had a good reputation here in Oz, but I know they are popular in Britain, and understandably so, most of the "older chaps" here will still remember Lucas ignitions, so anything has got to be better than that! Oh, and Newtronics (the old Piranha ignitions, re-named) were rubbish. Cheers, Terry. ;D
