brake master cylinder paint?
« on: December 12, 2009, 05:13:51 AM »
Whats the best paint for painting a master cylinder? Its for my cafe project so it does not have to have that original look. My outher option would be to polish it. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Cafe project? Polish the hell out it! Just my opinion but I'm a sucker for polished metal.

What would be the best way to strip the paint if I decided to polish it? Use paint stripper,wire wheel,sandblast?

If I were you I would strip the paint off, brake fluid may do it. If you you and abrasive you will have to remove those marks off before you start polishing. The smoother it is when you start, the faster it polishes.

I read somewhere that you can use oven cleaner to remove the anodize. But that will have to Waite until I can make it to the store.

I would be careful trying that, from the Easy Off site;

Quote
We do not recommend using this product on aluminum, as it may pit and discolor it.

The key word here is 'pit.' If you are going to have to polish out the pits, you might as well skip the Easy Off and just polish off the anodizing.

I've had good success with mar-hyde Tal-Strip II Aircraft Coating Remover http://www.autobodytoolmart.com/mar-hyde-tal-strip-ii-aircraft-coating-remover-3711-p-10949.aspx  Be careful and cover up well, it's strong stuff to be used outdoors. Did I remember to tell you to be carefull and cover up, eyes included?

I removed the anodizing with Mr Muscle oven cleaner, the foaming stuff. Anodizing is one of the toughest coatings you'll encounter, I tried buffing it off and it shrugged off all attempts.
I sprayed on the oven cleaner and checked it every 10 minutes. The aluminium turns grey and polishes easily. Wear goggles and gloves.

Oven cleaner worked great taking off the anodizing.  It did turn the aluminum a little black if I recall, but it polished off extremely easily.  You can practically rub it off.  This is definately the way to go.

+1, looks like pitting is not a problem at all. Good to know.
