Help... Honda failed me!
« on: December 16, 2009, 03:06:12 PM »
My CB350F runs great now, but I still need 80 size main jets to use the full throttle.  Unfortunately, Honda just stopped making them, and the new company is a little slow to get their equipment set up (couple more months).  Does anyone have a set of four "80s" sitting around, or know where I can get them?  All the local shops and online stores are out!

thanks,

I don't usualy advocate online purchases, but since your local Honda shop let you down... Bike Bandit shows #80's in stock for a 1974 CB350F1.  I am 78.2% certain these are the same for all 350-fours.  Their part # 3898841-001

Honda doesn't make carburetors or jets.

What year? I assume these jets are for a set of Kehin carburetors?

Sudco.com better have them, there are some other places you can try, look in the faq.

I looked into that, but couldn't find drill bits the correct size.  I checked with a few different shops, and just gave up in the end.  I'd have to "drill" the hole with my fingers anyway, and I'm not so sure how accurate that is.

Just in case anyone is having trouble finding these micro drill bits, look in a Hobby Shop, you can get a reasonable set with different diameters.  Maybe just the thing if you are trying to dial in the right size.  Start small and widen the opening as needed.

Drill bits will work, or you can use jet reamers like these:

$60 is a little steep if you only need to tweak one set of jets, but they work well and mine have lasted for a few years now.  You can also use them to ream the varnish out if you go easy and stop when you hit metal.

Well, this begs the question, "how many sizes 'up' can you ream out a jet?"

Hey Camelman - glad you found some jets  :).  This is accedemic now but since you asked:

I've used reamers to take a set of main jets from 130 to 150  or from 52 to 55 with no issues.  The reamers are tapered the entire length, come in various overlapping sizes, and brass is relatively soft.  With patience you can go up whatever size you want.  Just keep checking and reaming and checking and reaming and...

Reamers are better than drill bits in that the taper keeps things even and centered, and you can sneak up on the size you want.  I've used drill bits with some success, but usualy it gets ugly  :'(

Reamers aren't the answer for every situation, though.  For example the idle jet on a Honda 350Four has an emulsion tube on the end of it - that would make it a little more challenging since neither the reamer nor the gauge can really reach the part that needs to be reamed (circled).
