I am fairly light so maybe that helps {145-147 pounds}  i never had problems with the damping. The only time i ever had any trouble was running out of clearance in corners and lifting the rear wheel, i can tell you, that was never fun and called for the odd change of underwear... ;D  Have you tried the newer alloy bodied Ikons?, i am thinking of putting these on one of my 4's and haven't been able to find any reviews. I am getting a bit old to ride like i used too but still like to have quality suspension.

Mick

I have not tried any Ikons yet. From what I understand the valving is the same, and just the body of the shock is different for lower weight/better looks?

How was your ride height/spring rate?  Longer shocks, slightly longer forks and stifer springs on my K3 cb750 did a lot to help the ground clearance.

My ride height was standard, frame braced and what ever were the best tyres at the time, Pirelli phantoms and such. I have a mate who has been setting up race bike suspensions  since the late 70's so i just left most of the setup to him, i only changed spring rates on the shocks when 2 up, i also had progressive springs in the front and slightly heavier fork oil. The one i am building now has a GSXR1100 front end with progressive springs and a massive boxed swingarm as well as a very hot 1000cc engine.
Even though this will be the fastest Honda/4  i have owned, i don't think i will be riding it as hard as the ones from my youth...... ;D Although, it will handle well when finally set up..
