spray bottles are great but not perfect. one of my cats hates it but if she wants attention she knows she'll have to endure the bottle. kinda like kids who will accept negative attention over not enough.

a better idea is to give the cat an alternative like a cat tree house type of thing. my cats love the them. just like a cat who scratches your chair a scratch pad usually fixes the problem. instinctively they are climbing animals and the desire for the high ground is natural.

the mistake in training cat or dog is to engage in a battle of wills and sheer force; you'll raise a 'psycho" cat if you do. don't be cruel and remember if the anxiety of the animal is piqued you'll just have a miserable cat... and human.

for those who don't 'like' animals... i truly pity you.

edit: remember that your cat is still young. always maintain patience and in time this will work out.
and by that i mean either you or the cat will learn who's boss.  :D

I am not a cat assassin, I have had to put several down both on the farm, and because they became ill or injured.

I have grown more tolerant of cats in the house as my wife trained me to live with her. I also have taken steps like a cat door to the screen porch for it to take its nasty business outside.  The smell turns my stomach, and I spent my young life helping to manually clean the drops behind dairy cows.

But in the end folks, can't we all agree that the millions of dollars pissed away on cats (and their evil cousins dogs) would be better spent educating our children, building wind farms, feeding the mentally handicapped?  I would gladly send the additioan donation out every month.

Mark, I was going to suggest that a 22 bullet works great on cats. However, it sometimes takes more than one.
I had a cat that took to eating wild life on our farm. Chipmucks were his down fall. When I found a dead one
in the barn I simply dispatched the cat with a 22. Ferrel cats and farm cats do little to keep down the mice but
a lot to the Quail and other small game. I prefer the small game to damn cats.

Now that I've sufficiently stirred the pot (oh wait, you did that with your picture) I'll stop stirring.  ;)

with 6 cats in the house now, one of which is an Abysinnian, who LOVES water, i've pretty much given up on keeping the kids out of places i might not like, but doesnt really hurt anything. the only time i get mad at them and they know it, is when they hop onto the table when we're eating and theres company. they know better and stay away during those times. little bastids are not dumb thats for sure.

One method I have heard of that is supposed to work is tape.  Place some strips of scotch tape or packaging tape sticky side up in the area you don't want them to be.  Cats don't like stuff sticking to their paws and they will avoid the area.  I haven't tried this myself but a coworker said that it worked great with her cats.

it works. i used it on my living room furniture and in time i pulled it off when they gave up using my stuff as claw sharpeners.

you can buy double sided sticky, that's not too sticky, just for this function.

Ecosse, he has a cat palace thingy which allows him to get into the window and he uses it a ton. It has that sissal rope stuff or whatever its called and he took to scratching that and very little else, so it was successful at least in that regard.

Thanks again guys for all the good ideas, I dont' want to raise a neurotic cat, but I just don't think he belongs on the table. I don't even try to keep him off the computer or tv, but I'm not interested in poopy paws walking where my food is sat.

Thanks,

Brandon
Sure it's for sale! How much you ask?? Well, how much are you willing to pay??? Now triple it, that's the price!

The photo everyone objected to for a "free" trouble resistant cat was removed...

The cat in the toilet is real, just proves how stupid cats are, and makes me wonder why anyone would pet the scuzzy little child starvation devices.

i always put the tree in the stand and leave it undecorated for a couple of days. it takes rocky that long to get the climbing urge satisfied. i havent had a cat damage a single ornament since i figured that out.

WTF?  Cats are child starvation devices?
Are you going on some save the children rant in a cat thread?
If you don't like cats... maybe it would just be best if you stayed out of this thread, in particular.

i don't get it either. if you don't like cats, or whatever else, fine with me. but i don't get why people feel compelled to make (often inappropriate) announcements about how much they dislike them. another gem is bragging anecdotes of abuse or killings. so manly.  ::)

i have picked up a 6 1/2 foot tree up off it's side twice now this evening. gus the 18 pounder has apparently decided he's going to the top this year. he gets about 3/4 of the way up and bam, the tree falls over. my sides are hurting from laughing so hard, he looks at me like i did it to him  ;D

We've had luck with the spray bottle/squirt gun method. Just plain water, no vinegar, etc. You do have to be persistent.
My mother in law has tried batting them with newspaper, not enough to hurt them, just enough to scare them. Now they have taken to shredding the newspapers so she has to hide them under books and stuff.  ;D
