Hi rene

glad that you have managed to sell the bike.

a bit sad because i'm sure the road racing oriented people here miss your stories and updates already.

hope that all goes well for Yrjo, hip joints are pretty proven and safe surgery these days.

Merry Christmas to you and him!

Rene & Yrjo,

Glad you found a buyer for the bike, as you indicated, looked like a good deal to me...

Just caught up to the thread since your post in October (job loss and other things change your focus & energies a bit...).  I am glad Yrjo is doing well but hope the hip surgery helps improve his mobility and he can regain any momentum he had...and no hospital contracted infections. They can be the worst.
Glad you have good rehab and surgery centers there...
I won't even go to the hospital here unless I won't make it if I don't I'll drive, be driven, or transported to Benson (35 miles and 1/2 the size of this town) or Tucson (70-85 miles depending on the hospital you choose). Benson only has a good clinic/ER. Hospital here has had numerous cases of MRSA related deaths of healthy people who checked in for minor surgery or short stays and didn't walk out. They are incompetent in many departments is my opinion.

Best to you both and the family.

Hi everybody,

Some news to tell, Yrjo is back on his feet again after a long period. His hipjoint prothese is working well.
Still he has to be carefull  with it.
His left ankle and foot are  still a problem , probably they will never move like before, but remains stiff.
Both we have a new challenge in racing.
This season we are back on the track with a young guy in the dutch and german Moto3 championship on a Honda NSF250R.
Yrjo goes in for the datarecording and suspension and I go in for the engine and chassis .
It's totally different to classic racing , but we both like the challenge.

Great news about Yrjo's hip working well. Pray that the additional movement and warmer weather to come will help improve the range of motion and reduce the stiffness.  I understand those issues having the scars on my right ankle to remind me of a few past surgeries and the stiffness that comes with scar tissue.

I hope the new endeavor with the 250R is stimulating and fun and you guys enjoy the season and it has mainly positive notes.

Glad to hear Yiro's hip is mending well. I shattered mine at Daytona in 8 places a few years ago so I can sympathize with his situation and really hope he gets back to a comfortable form. I hope you continue to publish on this forum about your Moto 3 adventures, I guarantee you will have a big following, fascinating stuff!

Hi Yossef,

Indeed I was at Stefan's workshop , what brought you there, it's a long way from your home.
I bought a paddock start engine for the Honda NSF250R by Stefan, ver nice guy.
The computertuning and data does Yrjo , I'm just a part replacer.
Many parts of this bike has to be replaced at 2000km ohter at 4000 km, very expensive racebike.
There's a kit on it from Geo from Swiss, 52 hp at the rearwheel.
Bike was from Luca Grunwald, german moto3 champion in 2012, he rode it to a 8th place in a wet Sachsenring Moto3 GP.
On the second picture the new 15 year old rider Luuk Pruijnhttp://www.pruijnracing.nl/
Saturday we fly to Spain for a week testing at the Circuito de Almeria. http://www.circuitodealmeria.com/
First time for the rider on the bike and for us to set up the bike.
The bike is already on his way to Spain in a truck from another team.

Also with new HRC stuff you can have some mechanical problems.
This is the result from testing in Spain after one session.
Costs € 3000,= to rebuild it.

Wow! That was one expensive test session.  Hope that experience is repeated for a very very long time...
3000 Euros is still a lot of money...

Even with the devalued Euro today and the dollar not so strong, XE.com 's currency converter

3,000.00 EUR   =   3,877.67 USD
Euro   ↔   US Dollar
1 EUR = 1.29256 USD   1 USD = 0.773660 EUR
Mid-market rates: 2013-03-17 20:37 UTC

Went to local motorcycle dealer to check their prices on some parts for my CX500, they were way overpriced for the two parts I inquired about.
A new Honda NC700X with top box and saddlebags was priced over $9500. The naked version of the same bike was about $8600 if I recall correctly.

The Yamaha FZ8 was less money...but not in the same class.

Were the broken valves a result of a missed shift and over-rev or , mechanical issue or unknown?

Do you have any telemetry data collection on the bike? The RC airplane telemetry packages have come way down in price since they were first introduced.

Sponsored race teams have to have funds to cover these expenses along with typical consumables, repairs, and travel  expenses. Part of the racing experience. His family has been racing for years so they know some of these kind of costs. Disheartening when something like this happens on a new bike to you. (Used bike right? Not that the bike wasn't Ok before, just had some racing on it.)

Has Yrjo's hip, leg and ankle improved over the last month?

I pray that it continues healing and mobility continue to be restored. It was 18-24 months before my Achilles tendon in my right ankle was back to full strength and new mobility and near complete range of motion. 6 months and I was walking on it but much longer for full recovery. I was 46 when it happened so, I do not heal as fast as I did when younger..

We don't know why the valves broke , it was all new stuff
The engine is build up by a famous german tuner , Thomas Franz from Alpha Technik , is also working for the BMW SBK team.
He thinks one of the valves broke and caused the other damage.
We use a 2D datarecording system , many teams use it in GP racing.(http://2d-datarecording.com/en)
So we could see in the recorded data that the engine had run just 2900 meter and had no missed shifting or over revs.

But Thomas Franz has rebuild the engine for free !!!

We have some sponsors and at the moment a budget  just enough for a  raceseason without those unexpected things.
We are still trying to find some more sponsors.

About Yrjo, his hip is healed very well, but his left foot and ankle remain for always stiff.
He can walk without crutches now like a penguin.

Howell,

I am sorry to hear that Yrjo's ankle and foot are going to be permanently stiff. That is upsetting.

Too bad about the Moto3 team's misfortune, two engine failures would put lots of teams out of the picture. Hopefully, another time they will restart and have better luck/fortune smiling upon them.

Those CB500s are very nice. Hope they find a buyer that will use them well and they continue to have a good race career...
