OK, Put the Hammer down!
« on: December 26, 2009, 03:06:17 PM »
Don't know if you all are experiencing this but:
there are so many shows on television showing
ordinary people building a porch, with a railing, sand and painted,
then these people cut a hole in the roof, put in a doormer, sheetrock & paint,
then break for lunch.  ???

My wife looks at this stuff and adds to the to do list.

What should I do?
 ;D

What they don't show is the problems these "amateurs"  have down the track. These things have been all over the news lately in Australia. We had a run on these type of shows as well so every man and his dog thought they were weekend "builders". Then we start getting reports of verandas and awnings falling down and actually killing people.
If i was going to attempt any of these mods i would talk to a qualified builder first as a lot of these "improvements" are structural and should not be taken on by amateurs, I have a builders license....

Like any "Reality" show, they are not real, and they use expert advisors. They also compress time so she would have no way of knowing how long it to tape and sand wallboard, carefully remove shingles and cut a perfect hole in the roof. They are not real, and they never speak to expense.

Talk to her of reality as opposed to 'reality TV'. They always make it look easy on TV.
A porch would take the average weekend carpenter at least a month or two of full weekend work to complete. And that is if the weather is agreeable.

I'd look at her and say fine love, you know what I'm getting you, for birthday, christmas, whatever, is lessons at the local trade school for carpentry and they are hands on, so that you as faithful wife and helpmate can be my partner when we do that porch with the doric columns you've all ways wanted. This should either bring her back to the real world when she figures out how long and expensive the process will be or solved your gift giving for her for the next decade, first a tool box then a screw driver set, etc. If she's any good at it then she starts a reno company and she can be the one who talks to the housewives about the projects they want, a win, win situation.
