I can only give you the 5 most memorable rides I have ever taken - those that I will never forget and shaped my affection for the bikes themselves.
1) Early H1 Kawasaki Mach III - 500. The howl, the noise of air intake, the rush hit at 5,500 rpm, and the tire coming off the ground whenever the first 3 happen. No sound I've ever heard comes close.
2) Mid-1970's Kawasaki KX400 motocross bike. I've never met something before with such bad manners - the motor was a beast in the dirt.
3) 2004 GSXR 1000 - I never knew such power and insane potential for speed could exist in a package so small. I could not redline the bike in any gear - the first 3 would lift the wheel instantly and the speeds in the top gears was simply too fast for me.
4) Early 70's 650 Yamaha - just does something for me that is pure, raw, and memorable. What I think motorcycling art may have been in 1971.
5) 1973 Z1 900 - the first big-block. Honda's CB750 was the first four, but the big Z1 was the most awesome bike on the planet in 1973.
Gordon
ALL very impressive Gordon.
First bike I rode, that REALLY impressed ME was a 62' Jawa 250 Scrambler. Back then, in the early 60's, those bikes were bike and heavy, but it had such raw power (as it seemed back then), that is was scary. Little did I know that the 2 strokes were going to REALLY get to where they were Awesomely SCARY!
The OTHER bike that really mad me pay attention was a 65' Royal Enfield 750 TT Interceptor. Man, I thought that was the Ultimate in POWER and SPEED! I had no idea what was in store for us in the way of 4 stroke bikes either. Of course, when I saw my 1st Super Hawk in the early 60's, I thought IT was incredible as well. AND it was just a 305cc bike! There WAS another that I almost forgot. It was a Yamaha YDS2. 2cylinder, 2 stroke, 2 carbs and awesome speed, for back then!
Boy, what a difference from THEN til now! Even my 73' RD350 weighs a lot less than that old YDS2 and runs better too!
