Cam chain replacement!!!!! ENGINE REMOVAL .......Ohhhh

Well My cam chain has been making noise and the bike has 55000km so I decided to change it out.  I ordered one from Z1 and should be here any day. The engine was a PAIN to remove.....tried the laying the bike on its side thing.....NO GO!!!  So I had to improvise, two step ladders and some 2 x 4 with a little tweeking here and there I finaly got it out!!!!  THANK YOU JESUS!!!! :) :) :)
I removed the cam chain tensioner(plunger) it works 100% inspected the roller wheels on the tensioner and all look like new!!!

Very clever!!! Just what I needed.. I don't envy you.. but then you will have a nice crisp cam chain after its all done!

Man i am glad i have Gordons frame kit........I think the engine will be built while sitting in the frame..... ;D

My advice...turn the negative into a positive.  Now, you have a tighter chain, and a chance to clean the bottom of that motor up and the frame rails under the motor.  Anything that has been on the back burner...well, now is the time to do it!

If my motor comes out...it's game over...full powdercoat on the frame. ;D

I think I read somewhere that you help the chain through by turning the crank..... Wont this interfere with the position of the valves when the chain is cut and the cam is not moving....PISTON CONTACT WITH THE VALVE!!!!

Have you procured a master link and a way of peening the ends? (link tool)

Realizing that practically no one has replaced a chain on a CB750 this way, though it is theoretically possible, so there will be few who can tell you for sure the "right" way. (its the only way on a CB450 for example).

I would think you are correct and a piston could hit a valve if you turn the crank with the cam installed.  You could pull all the rocker arms, leaving the cam in place, and then turn the crank if necessary.

With the rear tensioner gone, I think the chain should pull through easily. Attach the new one to it with safety wire twisted together. If you need more room drop the cam sprocket off the cam.

Well im still waiting for my new cam chain to arrive, but I have the old chain cut and tried to pull it a little but it feels like it wont pull through with ease....feels like it is still catching on the crank sprockett. It may just take some wiggling and jiggling!!

You'll need to put wire on each end, or the new chain on one end and wire on the other, so you have something to hold on to while you let it drop down enough to disengage from the crank teeth.

Again I'm curious what you will use for a master link? Master links are not available for heavy duty style cam chains, if that's what you got from Z1.  The pins are the same but the HD side plate thickness will keep a CB450 style link from reaching all the way thru, IIRC.

I just went to their site, I see they make it easy. They have a link for the standard chain and a longer link for the HD chain. I hadn't seen that.

Did you buy their tool or will you make do?

scary  :o from the first pics..lol.. but i'm about to do the same thing, I've been thinking about the side drop the frame position..so you said it's tougher that way?? I'm all alone. does anybody have any suggestion..

Taking the motor out from the right side of the frame was easy to do for me, I was by myself too. Buuuut, I had also stripped the bike down to the frame for powder coating so all I had to do was separate the frame from the motor, not an entire bike from the motor. So I see this as being an almost impossible way to remove the motor from the frame if the bike is still in one piece for one person.Solution, get a case of beer and some friends who don't mind getting dirty and tweaking their backs.  ;D

Like rickmore said.....get some friends over!!! I tried to do it alone and with the front and rear wheel on the bike!!! It would have been much easier to do if I removed the excess weight!!
I did do the bike on its side to get it back in the bike!!
