CB500-4 daily rider/cafe project

Went and picked up a non running '72 CB 500-4 for $800 this morning. First bike I've had/ridden, and just had to get one.

On the ride home.



First thing we did was drain the gas and spray some carb cleaner into the bowls.



The bike started right up with some new gas, but ran a little rough, so we let it warm up and did a few laps around the neighborhood with it. After a little while I had my roommate follow me to the gas station, then to Jimmy John's for a victory dinner.

Here are a few pictures from the garage after. I'm going to tear the carbs apart to clean them as the choke has to be on to run decently and the bike feels like there is much more power to be had. The speedo doesn't work, and the starter needs to be rewired, and many things are going to see some flat black paint in the near future. Also I'm going next weekend to take the motorcycle course so I can get my endorsement.

So, what's the one thing I would do right after work today?

If you guessed rip the bike apart for some cleaning/rebuilding you would be right.



We fixed the #1 carb which was stuck closed, got the electric start going, took off some things to be repaired/painted, and did some general cleaning up. For some reason the car still isn't firing on cylinder one and not strongly on cylinder four, so we are going to pull it back apart tomorrow to try and clean out the jets better, and paint a few things. The coil is sparking, so I know that isn't the issue.

Also, this is why my side of the garage is amazing.

Sorry for no reply for quite awhile.

The bike is up and running GREAT; unfortunately the bike was jetted for summers in Orlando so it doesn't like the 40 degree weather we have been having down here. I have painted the fenders satin black, but no one needs to worry about me getting out of control and hitting the sidecovers or tank as I LOVE the blue.

The bike is amazing, and I get compliments about it every day from old guys at work who remember ogling over it when they were 15, guys on new sportbikes, and I've had a few waves and thumbs up from small children.

Only problem now is the float bowl gaskets are leaky so my ankles smell like gas after every time I ride it, and there are little drip marks on the ground after it sits overnight.

Looking to do a fiberglass seat soon, led tail lamps/turn signals, and paint a few more parts like the headlamp housing, swingarm, kickstand, footpegs, and lower forks. Also thinking of doing black spokes and polished lips. Should look pretty slick when it comes together.

congrats on your first bike!

sometimes the float bowls leaking is just because the gaskets are not lined up right. I know that sounds obvious, but I rode with gas pissing out for a month before I realized that was all it was.

So...it's been awhile.

Classes have been crazy, the Miata has gone through another motor, and I've acquired an SVT Focus to bum around in and carry motorcycle parts.

The motorcycle has been neglected, sitting in the garage (although not quite becoming a shelf), but no more! The main reasoning for the neglect was due to a "spontaneous loss of compression." I was merging onto the highway and felt a sudden drop in power, but limped it to my girlfriends home (20 minutes away at 70mph) then rode it back 20 minutes the next morning to go to work, then another trip to school, then finally home, all the time wondering why the bike was so extremely sluggish. I figured my head gasket, which had been weeping for about a month or three, had finally given out...if only I had been so lucky.



Yup, that's a friggin hole in cylinder one. I was shocked at how well it ran with a gaping wound to the piston. Yeah, there was a little smoke, but seriously, this isn't close to what I expected. So she sat while the Miata got sorted, every now and then with me cheating on her to ride my roommate's 550. Finally enough was enough, my roommate emailed me a Craigslist ad from a guy selling a 550 motor at a very good price with a rebuilt head this Saturday. Today after work I drove out in the faithful Focus to pick up it's first motorcycle part. Got there and the guy explained to me that it was a motor for a project him and his father started but never finished and has sat for the past five years.

She is a beauty.



So with all of zero knowledge of what all entails swapping a 550 into a 500 frame I had a 550-4. Turns out, not much, and after getting home around 9, having dinner, then inventing a few new curse words with a friend of mine, she had a fresh new heart.








So now, I need to attack the little differences between the bikes, mostly accesory pieces I don't have. I need the chain cover, clutch cable (they might be the same), clutch cable/right side, upper, engine mount, and some other little odds and ends. Needless to say I'm pleased with the work so far. The exhausts between the 500 and 550 are the same as far as fitment goes, and I need to rejet/rebuild the carbs, but should be running before too long.

My goal is to be running late May/early June to do a roadtrip from Orlando to the Keys with my roommate/friend of the past 15 years who will be moving to Seattle shortly after to work for Boeing.

I'll try to bring the quality of the pictures back up, but for now I'm sore, tired, filthy, and 110% pleased to have my bike coming back together.

Thanks, will do, but I'm pretty sure the chain guard and clutch cable mount are going to be the trouble makers.

Yup! I'm enjoying it. The SVT Focus is one of those amazing deals of the automotive world. Picked mine up for under $4k with 100k on it and its in pretty decent shape too.

As for the piston, I either injested something or that cylinder was super lean and burned a hole.

So, spent the better part of the evening thoroughly going through the carbs, boiling all the internal components in lemon juice and hitting everything in degreaser and carb cleaner. The only thing keeping me from trying to fire it up tonight was needing a little more fuel line, the little thread on spark plug adapters, and I think that's it. The bike still isn't quite ready to ride as I still need the clutch mount/motor mount and engine side cover for the sprocket.

Working on converting my tired and torn stock seat into a cafe seat, custom front brake lines with a caliper rebuild, and a new chain/sprockets.

After that, ride it to work all the kinks out before my 800 mile roadtrip with the roommate and his 550.

Now it looks like I'm going to be needing a new battery also... Just add it to the list. Also won a sprocket cover on Ebay last night so all I need is the clutch cable mount/engine mount and I'll be back on the road!
