well the newest idea of those stellar people is that they want Punxatawney Phil the groundhog replaced with a robotic groung hog. i think that it's commendable to take such an interest in the health and welfare of animals but some of the things they come up with are just totally out there. freaks

updated 1:03 p.m. ET, Wed., Jan. 27, 2010

PUNXSUTAWNEY, Pa. - An animal rights group wants organizers of Pennsylvania's Groundhog Day festival to replace Punxsutawney Phil with a robotic stand-in.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals says it's unfair to keep the animal in captivity and subject him to the huge crowds and bright lights that accompany tens of thousands of revelers each Feb. 2 in Punxsutawney, a tiny borough about 65 miles northeast of Pittsburgh. PETA is suggesting the use of an animatronic model instead.

But William Deeley, president of the Inner Circle of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, countered that the animal is "being treated better than the average child in Pennsylvania."

The groundhog is kept in a climate-controlled environment and is inspected annually by the state Department of Agriculture, he noted.

Deeley claimed that PETA is just looking for publicity and isn't really interested in Phil.

Clearly they're allowed free range in holes in the ground until, once a year, they're subjected to thousands of spectators and cameras, then back into the holes they go... like child actors and gary coleman.

YES! yesyesyesyesyesyes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. can you tell i feel kind of strongly on this subject? i'll never ever forget the day that a couple dozen PETA members picketed and blocked the entrance to the polo barn i worked and rode at. they were saying we should release all our horses back to the wild and OH MY GOD that saddle is leather!?!?!?!?! like i've said before, i am a firm believer in proper treatment of animals but the bunny huggers at PITA........i mean PETA are just overboard. when will they realize that the only way people are going to take them seriously is if they get rid of the wacky, idiotic #$%* they say and do, i mean, come on! human breast milk instead of cows milk for Ben and Jerrys Ice Cream? a robotic ground hog? hell i dont need a ground hog either............a couple of pounds of hamburger will do  :D

Living a minute or two from Wiarton amd "Wiarton Willie" I will shortly have to put up with the BS, that a Rodent can predict weather, but it seems to me that "Willie" lives in better conditions than his brothers,
so I wonder if the PETA people shouldn't be talking to the coyotes, the red tailed hawks and the various other predators and asking them to desist from murder, mayhem and cannibalism and just be nice. It's always struck me that there are groups of people around that moan about idiotic things and pay lip service to humanities best intentions but never get out there and do any thing to stop murder, rape, pillaging, or famine, sickness, war, seems to me that's where they should start and when that's settled perhaps become PETA'ists. By the way Kit nice one.

Vegetarians and vegans are total hypocrites.

I have a couple of moonbeam friends that are vegetarians because the one is a vet tech and it is cruel to eat meat but it is OK to eat fish for some reason in her wacky mind.

What, fish don't feel pain when you hook 'em and conk them over the heads?  ???
