Easy way to remove tach drive seal??
« on: January 29, 2010, 08:02:23 PM »
This is for an early sandcast 750 engine. The valve cover is much thinner than later ones especially around the tach drive hole. I've already knocked a sliver of metal away trying to get the seal out. I wonder if it needs to be replaced at all since I haven't seen others leak there however.............I do have a new seal and I've come this far. Any easy ways to remove a 40 year old seal?
Thanks,
Cliff.

Dental pick worked for me.

I used a small wood screw.  Go directly into the seal and maybe do 2 - one at 12 o'clock and one at 6 o'clock.  Use pliers to pull the wood screw.  Be real careful about not scarring the aluminum with the screw.

Good luck

I drilled a real small hole to get the screw started. Then it pulled out. I like the idea of the mechanics pick.

I finally used a pick, thank you dukiedook, and added more courage and out it came. The new one went home with the aid of a 10mm socket gently pushing it down the hole, aided with some PB Blaster.
Thanks for your quick response guys!
Cliff.

No problem, I have found those picks to be quite useful on all my vehicles.
Definitely a good find for a couple of bucks.

Here is what I use for pushing the new one back in. It is an old tach cable end. I guess you can make a tool out of anything you don't toss out.  ;D

Good idea Johnie! The 10mm socket I have fits the hole quite nicely, the only thing I could think of at the time. I also used several sockets to help replace the seals in the covers. Slowly, slowly....................
