Spacing for fork brace between a K8 750K on a 76 550K?
« on: January 30, 2010, 01:57:46 PM »
I have a old fork brace that came off a 750 that I would love to put on my 550. It looks like there used to be a TeleFlex sticker on the side of it but its says BMW on the bottom?  ??? ??? I could not find any model numbers or other markings on it. Other than "Made in W. Germany BMW"

I cant mock it up without taking the fender off and was hoping I could save myself some work if anyone already knows if the brace will work on my 550 front end? Anyone know if the fork spacing is the same? I dont want to cut up my stock fender to fit the brace just to find out it will not fit...

Or better yet anyone got a fork brace for a 500-550 laying around they want to trade...

If this topic would fit better in the HiPro forum, Maybe a Mod could move it over there for me?

I have a Telefix fork brace on my '77 550 K.  Apparently the specs for BMW and Honda are the same..as mine said BMW on the bottom too (but I removed it).

Also..looking through a Telefix fitment chart..the specs are the same for the two.

I'm not certain if the specs for a 750 and 550 fork are the same (think I heard somewhere that they were..but don't quote me on that).  You could compare measurements to find out. I believe that the specs are different for pre-'77 and '77-'78 though.

You can also contact Gary @ Spec 2..who still sells these braces..as he may be able to explain further (818) 837-1313 www.specII.com .

You should be able to get this figured out pretty easily..if you just follow up a little..

Cheers,

Al / Ichi

Later fork sliders 77-78 are a lot higher than the earlier bikes (on the 750's). I am pretty sure the spacing is the same but after looking at it for a while it would probably clamp on to the fork fine but the bridge is not high enough to clear the tire. I dont know if the later 550's had a higher fork slider?

Anyways I will just keep a look out for one made for my bike and year range, since I really really want to keep the front fender.

Well..if I may suggest: rather than "guesstimating" on whether or not the brace you have now will fit..why not try it on your intended bike.  The later 550's WERE higher @ the fender bridge. Also contact Gary @ the URL I provided: he's a wealth of knowledge on these things..has been selling them since our SOHC 4's were new!

Sayonara..
