Do I go for 1000cc build or buy a dirt bike
« on: January 30, 2010, 04:27:49 pm »
Got the itch to get back out in the dirt.  I have no dirt bike or gear so there goes $5000.  Alternatively do I go for a 1000cc engine build as I've got go the cam, cam chain, HD springs and retainers, HD cylinder studs to go with already and a spare bottom end, barrels, port polished head, SS valves.

1000cc Kit $900
Rods $850

or
CB750 ultra crank (lightened, balanced + rods) $1344 plus below and sell off the second set of rods lowering the cost overall.

This kit includes a 10.5:1 c.r. 1000cc forged big bore piston kit with sleeves. H370 billet cam, performance valve spring kit, titanium retainers, adjustable cam sprockets, Carrillo billet H beam rods, and heavy duty cylinder studs. Complete match components at a kit price $2299.

Case boring required, can put the engine together myself and I'll throw on some 31mm smoothbores or something...another $1200.

In the end it's only money, I could always keep what I currently have and buy a big TV.

It all seems pretty even at the moment.  If I did go for the dirt bike, I want some serious fun.  Had an XR250 geared low and it would climb and accelerate great around tight tracks.  Lacked the legs on the long run.  Two strokes....well I've only had a ride on a KX80 and that was interesting at power band, below that not really much to talk about.  I'm up for the 4 stroke thumpers for a bit of longer lasting engine life.  Had a ride on an XR400 an was amazed when I rode on the back wheel up a hill when they guy who owned it couldn't even change gears while wheel standing it on flat ground.  It was like the scene in Crusty Demons of Dirt #3 where the African American (not to offend anyone but he was black not sure of nationality, I do apologize) jumped on the dirt bike on the beach, took off did a wheel stand and then kept it going right over backwards and came off....I'm still laughing about it now as my mate did the same thing and it was p!ss funny.

If I borrowed a bike, one problem might be giving it back.

Looking through the posts at the moment MRieck, bloody nice work.  What's the price or a better questions what can you provide at what price?  An entire 1000cc engine delivered would be nice.

Finally told the Minister for War and Finance what I'm up too and she welcomed both ideas.....hmph wonders never cease....but at what cost.  She didn't however say I could have both!  ;D

I really dig 4 stroke dirt bikes. They aren't a kick in the behind like 2 strokes are (in the proper power band of course) but the reliability and smoothness make up for a lot. I do the borrow thing, my friend has an '83 Yamaha XT250 that still runs like a champ. The '83 is faster than his '08 XT250 and it has plenty of classic dirt bike styling to boot. It's a really fun little thumper.

I'd say find yourself an older 250 4 stroke dirt bike if you have the single track trails and adventure riding for it in your area. Throw street legal on top of that and you're set for anything but extended freeway rides, really...

Hard call on that one. I think I would actually have to go dirt. Buy a decent used 4 stroke and beef it up and you got some serious fun on your hands not to mention some good air time! I guess the question is if you have a good place to ride it. A track is ok but a pasture is the bomb! Up and down hills and makeshift jumps everywhere. Dang now I want a dirt bike!

Holy crap.  That is amazing.  I don't think the back tyre would last long or the guys riding behind you.  I reckon the guys riding CR500 are crazy and now someone has created those beasts, maybe not quite suitable for where I live.  I could always buy the big TV and watch it all!  ;D.  I'd be interested in video footage of the bike, might have to look on utube.

Looks like it's neither.  Buying a boat now, got the approval from the minister for war and finance.  I wonder how the CB750 engine would go in a boat?

Too bad about the bike thing.

You know what boat stands for right?

Thousand

I do not regret the purchase of my RM250.  It is hella fun although inconvenient.  No side stand and since I am not that tall a pain in the rear to kick start.  Bike and parts I shelled out a grand.  It is a work in progress.

Just like the thread title... here is where you should post/brag about your other love...dirt  8)

Mine is a 1990 Suzuki RM250 got it a about 6 months ago.  Worked on it for a while pictured is how it was

and how it is recently...

I haven't taken a current pic but I added a pro circuit exhaust system.

Well it's only money.  No point being the richest man in the grave yard.  I have the opportunity to go fishing for the next 18 months.  If I look after the boat/trailer/motor, I might get close to what I paid for it back.  It is second hand though so you run the risk as you do with buying a second hand bike/engine whether or not it will work 30 mins after you run it when you get it home.
