Photos from Barber's
« on: January 07, 2006, 09:01:01 PM »
For those of you not fortunate enough to be 45 minutes away from the Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum, here are some pictures I took today while browsing around that magnificent facility.  There would be many more but I ran out of space in the measly 32 MB memory card in my digital camera.  ::)

     Aw Right!!!
I don't know if that was a black and silver CB72 or 77 but, I had a 1966 CB72 painted like that when I was in the Air Force in Japan in 1967-69. All those bikes there were sharp but, that Honda brought back memories..      Appreciate the post,  Bill

Great pics Teach. If I'm not mistaken, pic 29 shows the amazing little double overhead cam 50 cc racer with no less than 12 speed gearbox. Some years ago I was in a race meeting where a couple of those were racing and the sound they made was fantastic. There were more gear changes than bikes at the meeting.

You're right I wish I was 45 minutes from Barber, a week ago I took a test ride, a very short test ride, @ 8 degrees F! Great white north my ass. Thanks for the soothing pics Teach.

oldbiker: I read every information sheet on every motorcycle in the joint and it's all running together at this point.  Next time I go I'm gonna take the 512MB memory card out of my Mp3 player and take a picture of the info sheet in addition to the motorcycles.

Last time I heard they have about 900 in the collection, but they keep about 500-600 on display at any one time.  On the first floor is the restoration facility (you can see it from the upper floors, they're the dark pictures).  They only allow the public down there on special occasions so I've only been down there once.  What you can't see from the upper floors is the "holding room" where the bikes that are awaiting restoration are kept, stacked on shelves like groceries.  The whole place is quite a site to behold.

If you have access to the latest issue of Motorcyclist magazine there's lots of neat pictures from Barbers.  I was there the weekend before the whole crew from Motorcyclist got there, but I did get to meet Brian Catterson (used to write for Cycle World, now for Motorcyclist).  He said he was thinking about moving to Birmingham because, "the houses are cheap and you've got Barber's right here...what more could I ask for?"

Motorcyclist said that if you live within 1000 miles it's worth it to go...I think it's worth visiting from anywhere.

Yeah I been there a few times, place is awsome, pretty great for me to be only 15 min's away from it,love to go in there and drool over all the cool bike's,
Thay had a vintage swap meet there a few months back and even had a race between a 1905 Harly(ran better than a new one lol) and a 1905 Indian,if I remember right the Indian won.
The place is a must see for anyone who loves old bike's ;D
If you do come to see it let me know maybe we could put togather a small group of local sohc rider's.
Would be cool to see more sohc4 than Harly's parked there, would make my day 8)
