'71 CB 750 gear shift/ drum stopper assembly help
« on: February 03, 2010, 09:21:52 AM »
hi everyone and thank you for so much useful information!

i've been following a few threads that have been invaluable help with my own backyard transmission rebuild.
i've got the motor almost completely reassembled but the shift drum stopper/ gear shift assembly is a puzzle i'm having a really hard time solving.
i've been using this schematic to assemble the parts independently-

http://images.cmsnl.com/img/partslists/gearshiftdrum-stopper-cb750-four-k5-us_bighu0105e1313_31f0.gif

but i haven't been able to configure it to work on the shift drum.

any help would be greatly appreciated.
thanks!

jon

Welcome to the forum :)

What problem are you having getting things together?  Would pics of the assembly help at all?  It can be a bit tricky to get the springs and arms in the right place.

More. Hope this helps. Remember the star shape piece has a blind hole, the pins don't go through it. There's one hole on the engine side that is deeper than the rest I think and that's where the pin for the blind hole in the star goes. I got stuck for awhile there. I think I'm remembering correctly. I can email these to you on a larger format if that will help.

thanks guys,

those closeup photos are a great help! only problem is my model is slightly different.
specifically parts 12 and 13 on this schematic:

http://images.cmsnl.com/img/partslists/gearshift-drumspindle-cb750f-750-super-sport-78-us_bighu0058e0218_0a81.gif

i realize this is pretty vague but my main concern is parts 7 and 12 on the other schematic and where they sit relative to the end of the shift drum and to the end of part 18.
i'm fairly sure arm 12 rests on the end plate of the shift drum (13) so that it can dip into that notch (neutral?) as it turns. but in photos, arm 7 seems to live BETWEEN that same end plate and the thin plate behind it (11) while resting against the back of part 18 to keep it in place also.
but when i tighten down the bolt that holds that arm/spring/bushing assembly together it seems to bind and ultimately makes it seem like arm 7 wants to be on the motor side and BEHIND the thinner plate (11) threatening to warp it and making the whole assemlby seem wrong...

i know how abstract this must seem so i thank you guys ahead of time for any help you might have and apologise for any confusion!!

i've been sitting with this puzzle for so long that i think i may just put it all back together and put the motor in and get it going. then if i have a linkage/drum stopper problem i could always just take it to a shop for some professional help. it's a minor repair for a pro and could probably be done while i wait and watch even though it WOULD be slightly heartbreaking after having come this far in the rebuild!!

thanks again for your time gentlemen!

jon

ps- i have some photos of the particular offending parts in my phone but they are too big for upload. i will try to get some going here soon..

My bad!! :o I'm working on a K0 and that's what the pictures are!! I went back to my K1 build and found this picture which may help. Sorry for the confusion. It finally dawned on me after going back to my pictures. Here's a picture on the '71 shifter, I hope this may help.

I think (?!) the shifter arm 18 lives between the two plates 13 and 11 pushing and pulling on the pins to cause the gears to change. It looks like 7 rides behind 11 riding on the pins to prevent overshifting. Arm 12 does rest on the end plate according to my new pictures. these are from my K1 which shifts like it's supposed to. I never took these apart so this is factory installed. Do you have the spacers, springs, arns ,etc. installed on 8 correctly? It looks like 7 should be close to the motor side from my pics. Does this help?
Confusing eh?
