stereo hookup question
« on: February 04, 2010, 09:58:34 AM »
both of my recievers have pushbuttons labeled speakers a  and speakers b. does this mean if i had 4 speakers that i could run all 4 at once? or is that idea bad?

Yup, that's what it means.
That would just give you
stereo through 4 speakers, of course.
Not quad.

I wouldn't count on it for certain (though you are likely right)

An old receiver of mine would only run 1 set at a time but you could choose which set. I guess it was an early form of 2 zones like on newer receivers today.

Yeah it depends on the receiver. Some only did channel a or b and some did both. Problem is that trying to run all 4 might be too much for just the receiver.

the sony in my garage has a and b... but can run either or both... its fairly old, late 80's. if all else fails you could calculate the ohms, and run them either series or paralell off just a. check the ohms though as you could overheat components if your not careful! i can help with the ohm calculation if needed, just give me some info... make and models..

i just tried it. one set or the other, not both. in fact the 23 year old Onkyo AND the 15 year old sony are the same way. funny but the 50 watt RMS Onkyo sounds better to me than the 100 watt RMS Sony at anything lower than 1/2 volume and thats alot louder than i usually listen at, unless the wife isnt home.

wattage has turned into a friggin cock comparison.... whose is bigger. bose is usually very low wattage, and will sound twice as good as something twice as big. most recievers will never see their full rms anyway... especially if your married.and rms is just a factory assigned average that may not be true for any particular reciever. it is not regulated, and in my experiences is almost never true to the equipment... i have a 150w sony that only puts out 90w at 50% volume...

and now with the monster speakers (they will make the neighbors wet their beds) this old equipment sounds even better. the newest component is the sony 5cd changer i got in late 88 or early 89. it all works great and for someone like me, i have absolutely no use for the super high dollar stuff since i'm half deaf from riding motorcycles with no ear plugs and band practices with no hearing protection.

my hand-me-down 1970's MK (Miller Kreisels - 12" sub and 1x5" + 2x1" ea-fronts ) on an old denon sound way better and FEELS louder than my 500w sony (5+sub) bought a year ago. (same room size)
I even blew the 12" on the MK and they shipped me a new one for $100.
