I started the tear down my 175 after I found out 3rd gear was gone.  I got the motor out and was disassembling.  Couple findings...

The oil filter rotor:  If I would have looked at the manual first I would have known the cover was just pushed on.  Instead I tried to use a screwdriver on it and spin it (kind of like the way hubs are).  I broke off the remaining tab (someone already broke the other one) before I realized you just grab it with pliers and pop it off.  No real harm done, you can reach into it with a awl type tool and pull it off.

Once inside the filter rotor I found metal flakes.  No real surprise with the transmission acting up but isn't there supposed to be a filter in there?

The last worry is that bolt inside it.  Anyone have any ingenious ideas on getting it out?

Oh, and dig the weird scratches on the clutch housing...

Its a centrifugal filter. No element inside. No need to take the cup off, just wipe/scrape out the crud.

That nut inside looks like the clutch hub nut on my 750. Fold the lock tab down and use special wrench to remove the nut. According to the parts fiche it is the same: 16mm.

I might be wrong about this but I think the CB750 might be the first production Honda to use a paper oil filter element.

Yeah I got to looking around after I posted that.  Just the pump screen.  I was able to fashion a tool to take the nut off (I hope).  I used a rotary tool to grind down a 7/8" socket.  I had to trim it a little after the photo but you get the picture.  Now I just have to find a way to keep the engine from rolling when I try to turn that nut.

     Looks like you are on the right track with your home made tool.
     Pro Motion sells the tool. I am told.
     If you know someone who has ridden a Honda Twin for some time and actually does regular maintenance they should have the tool. The cup is much easer to clean out of the engine.

Jam a penny between the gear behind the oil filter and the larger gear behind the clutch basket that it meshes with.
