Exhaust Question
« on: February 13, 2010, 11:27:36 AM »
I was thinking of making a custom exhaust out of my 4-2's. Any advantages to running a balance pipe between the 2 sides?  Would it act more like 4-1?
Any thoughs are welcome.

I took my 4-2-1's and modified them to be a 4-1.  In order to make them work I had to add 3" to the down protion of the number 1 primary.  By doing so the four primary's swung up nicely under the rightside frame rail.  I bought a four pipe collector from http://www.spdexhaust.com/CollectorsB.html FC4138-17518C
which allowed the original rear pipe to be slipped over the collector as in the OEM setup.

I wanna keep the 4-2, but I'm wondering if a balance pipe would help any.  Tuning or performance wise?

Where would you be placing the balance pipe?

Probably under the swingarm pivot or closer to the front of the bike if I lose the centerstand.

The fact that the balance pipe would be running at 90 degrees to the exhaust flow and at least 10" long I would believe any benefits would be reduced.  I have read that a crisscross-over or X pipe provide more benefits as the flows are less disrupted as they are straighter.

YUP it sure does makes it really hard to change the oil as well!!!

what your refering too is a "H" pipe like on a "stang" the sotra work but the benefit is not as much as a 4-2-1 would be just get Cycle X's pipe and call it a day his pipe looks good its cheep and its already made just a bolt on afair dont try and reinvent the wheel? right?

my r75/6 had a balance pipe at 90 degrees to flow, at least 10inches long and very close to the front of the bike.  find a front-view pic of a 1976 bmw r75/6, you'll find it.  somebody, somewhere reckoned there was an advantage.

edit:  i just googled "motorcycle balance tube" - plenty of good reading, they seem to have a positive effect on v-twin and boxer performance.
