Hello, I am a new member and also a new owner of a Honda cb750. This bike was sold to me as is with no gas tank, no battery, doesn't start but will kick over with compression. The gear shifter has been broken off. Most of the cables are missing and not connected. Needs new tires. Needs to be rewired. Probably will need new exhaust and a whole lot of other things but I knew that going into it.
I picked this bike up for $250 bucks as a project. I have an 08 Honda cbr 600rr for fun but I wanted something to work on and build myself. This will be my first build and I am planning on building a bobber.
My question for starters is this...
The previous owner didn't have this bike for long and claimed to "not know" much about it. He did tell me that the frame is a 1978 cb550 which is what the title say's. The engine is a 1972 cb750k2. which is correct according to the serial on the engine.
I dont know a lot about these old bikes so I believed him. I posted in the new members area with photos and info and was informed that the 550 and 750 are NOT interchangeable. In fact, I have a 1972 750 engine in a late 70's model 750k frame and a title for a 1978 cb550. After all of this I am looking on the neck for the vin number and it matches the title. The vin plate has been removed and the area where the number is stamped on the neck does look sketchy. (see pics)
There is a cop that lives next door to us and he is really cool. Should I explain all of this to him for his advice and see if he can run the vin number? Even if the vin comes back clean is there a chance in hell that i will be able to register this frame? Or do I just purchase a new frame for my engine and move on?
