After replacing the stock fork springs with progressive springs, I had to figure out how to put them back together by myself.  It's a real bugger trying to get that top cap screwed back on!  This is how I did it:  I clamped the fork lower in my vice then ran a ratchet strap up over the top of the cap and back down under the vice.  I slowly tightened the strap, all the while making sure the cap was moving toward the threads correctly.  Once the cap made correct contact with the threads I simply screwed the fork tube onto the cap.  Viola!

I built a soda blasting cabinet out of about $30 worth of parts (including the $8.99 Harbor Freight blasting gun).  I use my shop vac to clear the dust out.  It works pretty well for what it is.  The small hopper and my small pancake compressor run out about the same time (roughtly 60 seconds) so it works out OK.

I rolled the bike outside last week to see how the soda blasting would work out in the wild (outside the cabinet).  Needless to say baking soda gets EVERYWYHERE!  So after a couple brief tests I abandoned the "blasting in the wild" approach in favor of finishing the cleaning by hand - which I SHOULD have done before reassembling!!!

I finally installed a proper kickstand.  It's used but should work (and look) a TON better than that 70's foot kickstand that was on there before!  Thanks Andy!!!

Thanks Ed.  I know it sounds like more excuses, but without a job this is gonna take a wee bit longer.   :-X
I can't buy any parts until I sell stuff, and that ain't goin' real well right now!  At the bare minimum I still need to buy a carb rebuild kit, MC rebuild kit, front and rear brake pads/shoes, Dyna S ignition, wires, coils and plugs, battery, chain/sprocket(s), turn signals and a brake light.  That's not even thinking about SS brake and oil lines, seat cover made, paint, or the dozen or so other little customizing things I can do later on.
But HEY!  I got the kickstand on!!!

I just ordered carb rebuild kits from Chris at Z1 - super nice guy!  I ordered 4 rebuild kits, new carb boots, and 125 and 130 main jets.  I'm not sure which jets I'll need, but better to be safe.  I was going to order 127.5 mains too but they don't carry them.  Parts should arrive Saturday.  Wish me luck!

I just ordered a tail light and turn signals from Carpy.  I like the old-school style of the tail light, and I like how the turn signals mount close to the seat and headlight.

I got my parts from Z1 yesterday - 2 days after ordering!!! :o  Chris hooked me up with some extra swag too!   ;)
Now I just need to clear off my work bench so I have some place to tear these bad boys apart and rebuild them (after soda blasting, that is).

I rebuilt the carbs and installed them with pod filters today.  I hadn't rebuilt a carburetor in many years, so it basically took me all day to completely disassemble each one individually, dunk the parts in a gallon or Gunk carb cleaner for half an hour, rinse, blow out all the orifices, and then soda blast the bowl and carb body.  Wash, rinse, repeat 3 more times.
Since I have an 836 kit, mild cam, 4-into-1 exhaust, and pod filters, I decided to try 125 main jets (I also bought 130's in case I need more!)  I also moved the clip on the jet needle to the second groove instead of the middle as described here:

The seat and tank are held on by two zeus fasteners in the seat.  First, the tank has 2 modified brackets that receive the rubber frame mounts.  Then the seat has a custom bracket that slides under the rear lip of the tank (which is held down by the rubber tank strap).  Then the two zeus fasteners attach to the rear frame bracket.
So basically I can remove my tank and seat with a 1/2 turn of two zeus fasteners. - (the tank is sitting slightly high in the rear because it is sitting on the strap that is securing the bike to the lift)

The seat didn't come with any hardware.  I had a local machine shop fab it for me.

I've had a few freelance gigs over the summer but nothing sustainable.  However, I have really been enjoying my time with the girls!
The electrical is next.  I have a new main harness already, so just need to track down a headlight bucket to get things started.  I also need to buy the Dyna S and 5 ohm coils/wires/plugs.  That'll set me back about $270.  That's about all I need to get it started.
My goal is to get her running in the next few weeks.  Once she's running the rest can be assembled and/or replaced as "bolt-on" exterior pieces without too much trouble.
What main jets did you end up using on yours?  125s?  130s?  I took a guess and installed 125s (I have 130s in case I need them).  I also lowered the jet needle one position.  Hope that doesn't lean me out too much.  I'm looking for more lower end and not so much on the top end.

I've hit (another) snag!
The "new" front end I wound up using appears to be from a later F/K bike.  '76-ish?  Anyway, that would certainly explain a few things.  First off, my machinist had to do some handiwork to get this front end to even fit on my '71 frame - if I remember correctly, the '71 neck was too short.  But I also discovered yesterday that my front fender won't mount up.  I was, however, able to mount the brake caliper using the later model bracket that was on the newer front end.  But mainly the top triple tree is so radically different than my '71 tree that I can't use my original tach and speedo gauges - the mount is COMPLETELY different!
I wonder what other issues I'll run in to...?
Looks like I need to hunt for some decent gauges and a mounting bracket.  Anyone want to trade for a nice set of K1 gauges with only 16K on them?

Another day, another snag.
Today I discovered that my newly chromed rear brake stay doesn't quite get past my fat 140/90-16 Bridgestone.  Doh!  Why didn't I think of that BEFORE I got the brake stay chromed?!?
Any suggestions?

Can't you space it out a bit where it bolts onto the hub?. If the arm wasn't chromed i would just bend it a bit, doesn't need to be much...

A spacer is the way to go.  I used a thick washer where it bolts to the brake hub on mine.  You could also run it on the outside of the swingarm mount rather than in the middle, just get a longer bolt.

Here it is spaced out (I know, it's ugly!).  It clears the tire but just BARELY.  I'm not sure how I feel about mounting it on the outside of the front mount...

Clear is clear.  As long as your wheel is straight then you shouldn't have a problem.  That's how mine looks as well.  Every once in a while I have to wipe a black smudge off the brake stay from the tire deforming and touching it but it's not a problem.  MCRider had his mount moved on the swingarm so he could run larger tire.  That may be an option down the road but I see your swingarm is nice and shiny.

Yah, I already had my swingarm and brake stay chromed before I realized the clearance issue.  Otherwise I would have just bent the brake stay a bit.  Oh well.  I'll run it like it is for a bit to see how it goes...  I still have more cleaning and reassembly before I get to the actual riding part.

I hope to be able to afford the Dyna S and coils within a couple weeks.  Then we'll see if the new 836 will roar to life!

I started making an aluminum template for an exhaust bracket (don't want to use a hanger).  I still need to trim it down somewhat, but this is the basic idea.  I think I'll have someone fab the final bracket out of 1/8" steel then get it powder coated black.
