What _exactly_ did I just buy?
« on: February 28, 2010, 04:28:46 PM »
Hi all,

I've gotten back to work on my 550F project (http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=46942.25), and just picked up some new bits for it earlier today... Mainly, a complete dual disk setup off of a later year/model Honda.

Master cylinder 'window'...are these replaceable?

I also got some other 'bonus' bits, which I'm going to sell (once I can advertise them properly!).  The guy I bought everything from said that apart from the front end, everything was off of a '76 CB 550, but I don't see how/why...

Carbs:

Rear fender:

Front fender:

Tank:

The tank looks about right, but the front fender (which also came off of/fits the front end I got) looks like it's from a nighthawk...however, the rear fender isn't right...  The carbs don't look like the ones off of my bike, or like the round cap variants.  So, what do I likely have my hands on?!

I don't know for sure, but nothing looks to be from a honda 550, except maybe the carbs

Tank and Front End appear to be from a CB650SC Nighthawk.

Carbs look like the mechanical PD's...  what's the model # stamped on the side of the carbs?

Not sure about the fender.  Could have been a Frankenstein bike...

Carbs should be off 77-78 550K.  PD46A or PD46C.

Fender is ,  fatbob rear, rigid, left side chain cutout.

Everything else (cept carbs, not sure?)) is from a Nighthawk as shown...

The fluid sight windows are replaceable but I don't think you can get factory lenses. I've heard if a guy on eBay that sold watch lenses that were the perfect size and had to be epoxied into place. I've also seen people stick a dime in it and jb weld over it too, :D
That looks like the usual early 80s master cylinder like was used on shadows and such. Dano

Heh, this is why I like this forum -- fast, knowledgeable answers!  The guy I bought this stuff off of said that it had all come off of a running CB 550, that he knew the front end was from something different, but that it directly bolted on...  After a going-over this afternoon, I'm now not entirely sure that the front end will work for me, for two primary reasons: 1) I want to have spoked wheels on my bike, and think that swap would be relatively straightforward, except for 2) which is that the rotors mount directly to that alloy wheel, and the rotors on my wire wheels look to be quite a bit thicker.  Damn.

Oh well, like I say, I guess I'll probably just keep the master cylinder, lines, and splitter, and adapt them to the single-piston calipers I've got, and sell the rest... Sooo, anyone know of anyone that wants CB650SC Nighthawk (thanks, CBJoe) parts?  ;)
