Should I buy a Dream 50R?
« on: March 04, 2010, 02:40:37 PM »
A fella I know has one of the Dream 50R's that Honda put out a few years back to commemorate the 110. I believe the msrp was something like 5,500$.

I've been feeling him out on it for a while and he finally offered to sell it to me for 2k. Is it worth it? They are cooler than penguin #$%*, but top out around 40mph. Not the most practical bike to say the least.

I haven't seen one for sale in a long time, seems like it could be a good investment. Or a very expensive piece of furniture in my living room.

For shipping costs, surely you could find one way over there accross the pond! And save your pennies for something with a few more horses than a riding mower!

Any opinion on value on these guys? I never see them for sale so I don't know whats happened to them in relation to the MSRP.

Very cool bike. That's sure to be a future classic. I would buy it.

I've only seen one, and that was in the honda tent at a formula one race.

Saw one at the superbike races at Road America a few years back. Way too cool!
They really need to add the crap to sell them as mopeds! I can't imagine a 14 year old that'd pick a scooter over one of these!

I know they made a street legal conversion for the Japanese market. Maybe you could convert it over?

I reckon $2000 for the bike $1000 or less for shipping $350 tax and I've got a dream 50 for let's say all in $3500....they sell for £4000 here so I'm still in pocket and I can also go 50cc racing! Woop!

man, i think i'm gonna buy it. IF i can get some more info on making it street legal.

I read there was a 'cottage industry' of aftermarket performance parts for these bikes in japan. After searching for about an hour I couldn't find a single website that offered any kind of parts or kits for this bike other than HRC.

anyone know of any?

Yes there's loads of tuning parts for it - Takegawa are the big suppliers but you might need a local dealer who has contacts in the far east to make it happen. Oh, and they are very very much not cheap! I know a guy here who put a race cam setup and close ratio box in his shipped in from japan and the two items cost more than the bike itself.

If you struggle Stateside, you can talk to Phil Denton at www.phildentonengineering.com as Phil has lots of contacts out there and can source this stuff.....or you could broker the deal to let me buy it  ;D

That's the street legal Dream 50. Those are from the late 90's, different than the 50R of the early 2000's

Which leads me to a question... are these Takegawa kits I keep seeing for the Dream 50's compatible with the 50R's? Mainly that 89cc overbore kit and the aftermarket CDI would interest me

Making it street legal is of course more than simply adding lights.  You'd need to check with your local officials on how to register a 'custom' bike I think.  This thing likely doesn't have a VIN on it.  Maybe a serial number of one form or another, but not a recognized Honda VIN.

Of course then there's the question of insuring it.

If you don't mind playing in the grey area, find a junkyard 50cc Honda and stamp the new one with the old one's VIN ;)

If  you just love the look of that bike, but are worried about the logistics of making it street legal and performance, just get a CB175, a seat and tank from airtech, and some clubmans. You'll have a bike that looks very similar that's street legal and has power, to boot.

Arkansas is ultra lax on vehicle registration type stuff, as a moped I should have no problem registering it after an inspection. I'm half interested in the bike as an investment type thing, not only the look.

Anyone (lordmoonpie maybe) know for sure if these takegawa 50 kits from monkey bike in the UK will fit the later 50r motors?

Well you could make it a daily rider if you can find a route that is down hill both ways.

Hi Simon, do you have any contacts who ship from USA? my CL is still there and best offer I have so far is £550 Newark NJ to Thamesport that includes all handling and dealing with customs, duty & VAT is then added. Not sure if you are aware but you pay duty on machine value + shipping costs then VAT on total.
There used to be a road version for sale at a shop on London Rd, Stoke on Trent.
