750 K0 / sandcast gauge 'glass'
« on: March 08, 2010, 06:03:24 am »
Everyone knows that the 750 K0/Sandcast gauge 'glass' (plastic) suffers from crazing and cracking and Yamiya make repros but cost a fortune. A pair of NOs gauges can cost up to 1500GBP

Whilst waiting for my customer to check out  a software mod today, I had half an hour to spare so I decided to take the glass from an old K7 and compare it in size and curvature to a plastic K0 one. My findings are that the diameter and curvature are almost identical and I reckon with a bit of careful machining and bonding with water clear resin, you could do a really neat job.

Anyone ever tried this?

My existing plastic K0 clocks are fairly good, and certainly too good to experiment on but I will keep the two K7 glasses 'just in case'.

I think that Yamiya sell glass for the later bikes which is quite cheap but there are a lot  of old scrap later style  K/F gauges out there.

Also on the tacho, I was thinking of getting some laser cut  'masking' characters made for the markers on the redline. If these are applied and then the redline resprayed and the masking characters removed whist the paint is still soft, this may be a way of preserving the original dial face.

Anyone know what the redline colour shade is on the K0. I have a  perfect K7 one which is really bright red but looking on the Yamiya site the K0 repros look like a deep 'salmony pink' colour.

Have you taken the originals apart yet? I found that once I got the KO gauges apart all the plastic glass needed was good polishing inside and out. That took care of the glazing and I could spend the $$$ on new face plates instead of the glass. I used a commercial plastic polish and was pleased.

Same as John. Mine needed refreshing, the faces were faded and the lenses less than perfect. I reapplied faces and polished the lenses with Novus fine scratch remover #2 and then finished up with their #1 plastic clean and shine. They look new. Here's a link to some shots I saved in my gallery album.

No - Mine are Ok but the spare I have has deep crazing (which I think is stress cracking) all over it. It may be down to our UK climate.

Johnie - your redline looks pinker than Bob's. Which is correct?

I have had them apart by the way.

cheers,

Johhie's redline color is correct. These face plates turn the blue-green of the numbers when they fade.
