Fork oil capacity CB550?
« on: March 11, 2010, 11:35:11 am »
I had my forks completely apart and now I'm going to refill them from dry.

My Clymer manual states on p. 161 that the CB400/500/550 takes 5.4oz (160cc) of oil.
But on p.173 under specifications it states 6.5oz (190cc) for the CB550.
Which is it?

I've checked the FAQ's but that only had info about the 750.

Thanks!

There are two different fork styles for the 550.  So, it depends on year and model.

This is for the 1974 CB550K listed in my signature info.
I wondered if the different amounts were for different models or if one is for after draining and the other after rebuilding.

Thanks, -K

The owners manual for my 74 CB550 has a fork oil replacement section.  In which, it states to refill with 5.4~5.6 oz. (160~166cc).

In section 13 of the Honda shop manual, under cb550 specifications, It states that the Front fork oil capacity 6.3~6.5 oz. (185~191cc).

You do use less for a refill than for a dry assembly, as you can't really get all the old oil out from the drain plug.

Got it, thanks!
Since I had everything apart, I'll go with the higher volume.
Maybe start with 6 oz and see how it feels.
