pfffft... where's the charming scottish actor and support trucks?  ::)

"interesting" choice of bike for this venture.

riding position must have been a joy.

at any point did one of his mates point out a lack of r1 friendly roads dominating the glob?

still trying to determine if all these circumnavigators have more b@lls or less brains than i.  ;D

Where is your sense of adventure Ecosse!  ;)

Anyone can do a round the world trip on a BMW GS or other adventure tourer bike - its not so hard. But...to do it on a chopper or an Indian (done last 2 years by RTWDoug) or an R1 (see above or see Nick Sanders - Fastest Man Round the World also on an R1) is a little more challenging  ;)

the aches and pains that come with age (and mistreatment) are powerful disincentives.  ;D

i have been inspired to do my own trip though.

i think i'll call it "slacker-pansy way around (the block)."

seriously, someday i'd like to road trip. it'll be a couple of years from now though. life n stuff first.

check these guys out.

I read a book last summer titled Storm.  Can't remember the author and the book is sitting at a friend's lake cabin.  Takes place around 1990 and is about a trip around the Baltic Sea by a guy and his girlfriend on a BMW.  On the way through Finland they meet a rough character who has been riding around the world on an old Harley Davidson.  He had just come through Russia.  I wonder how many have done this just on their own and not as some sponsored expedition for the purpose of a film or publicity?  With a film crew and support truck it just isn't that interesting to me.

pretty cool trip, but man, poor bike! I love that vintage of R1. pains me to see it dumped and all beat up. but if he can afford to take that trip, he can probably afford the repairs at the end.  I wonder what the maint was like on that beast of a trip!
k8 project, a long way from done.....

I think he was sponsored by Clymer so no cost to him!

I remember reading about this in a magazine a few years ago. I think he's from the Netherlands and obviously a nutter.
I'm pretty sure he wasn't sponsored or had support along the way though, it was very much a solo efford. The sponsor may have come later.

I agree, what's he gonna do, break down and bust out the Clymer to fix it?  That'll be the day!!  I can see it now..."Step 1.  Remove engine. Step 2.  Now just undo everything you did to fix whatever was broke.  Happy Trails, loser!   Step 3.  That was a joke."

I remember someone did this round the world tour on a first generation GSX-R 1100 back in the days... 1987 or 1988 maybe?

Thanks for posting this. I was actually just telling my cousin about this guy's trip. We have been talking about an Alaska trip & I remembered what this guy accomplished on an R1.
