CB550 only starts with hand over intake
« on: April 25, 2005, 08:34:58 AM »
The only way I can get my '78 CB550 started is by removing the air cleaner and putting my hand over the intake to restrict the air flow.  It won't start using the choke alone.  Does this mean my pilot jets are too lean?

Thanks,
Justin

I just cleaned the pilot jets and installed an inline fuel filter last week.  I doin't see how they could clog that fast.

Justin,

You say it won't start with the choke, but will with your hand over the intake? Are you sure your choke is working properly, i.e., closing all the way?

Yes, I'm sure the choke is working.  I checked it before I put the carbs back on.  And I do notice that it helps the bike start...but just not quite enough.

You might want to double check your float heights.  I remember a website out there, that had a chart with float heights for the different cb's.  If I find it, I'll post it.  Or if someone else knows what I am talking about, please post it.

Check that the idle screw is turned in. Just enought to let it idle.

Did you clean the Passages in the carb body when you cleaned the Jets?
