what do you guys think of this bike for $600?  apparently it hasnt been running in 13 years.  therefore it will need a battery and the carbs cleaned.  i am thinking it will be a great project.  anything i should keep in mind before i plunge?

ok, ok i just got it for 500 bucks.  i am picking it up tomorrow and will take some better pics.  this is gonna be the beginning of a healthy project for sure.  i am gonna do something retarded original and build something you guys have never seen!   a CAFE!  haha kidding, i have a bobbed cm400, a slightly cafe'd 2008 nightster and somewhat restored cm450 fo the girlfriend.  all i was missing was a cb750 and now i have one....totally excited to tear it all apart!

thank you, what i need to do is get some better pics  of the cm400.  i gotta admit it is really nice and im picky as hell!  i'll get some more thrown up here asap (as soon as i get back with my newly acquired 750)!!!  wish me luck...

i like to start off by saying that this 750 that i picked up is rough.  very rough, but it is good where it counts.  Got it for 400 bucks.   i now understand why it has such a devoted following.  it really didn't take a whole lot to get it going. 

i pulled the plugs to check for spark (notice the washers on the 4th plug), no spark, cleaned the points, added a small 12v battery and voila! spark.  according to the plugs the bike has been running very well up until it was stored 13 years ago.

next was fuel:  i pulled the carbs and checked them and of course they were pretty bad and needed a good cleaning.  so i cleaned them up with a bit of carb cleaner, tooth brush, a piece of wire, and compressed air.  all the passages were cleaned out and i reassembled.  of course i had to break something:  the float bowl drain screw snapped right off!


i installed the carbs, hooked up an aux. fuel tank and started kicking.  after a few pops and sputters and some disgusting black smoke she fired right up!  what a beautiful sound too!  these old bikes a breeze to work on and i now understand why they are so popular!

so it runs amazing!  it sounds awesome!  a part of this must be contributed to the 4 into 1 exhaust thats on it.  from what i can tell there should be a 4 into 4 exhaust on this model (1976 cb750k).  the 4 into 1 exhaust was reserved for "f" models.  so, what is this header from?  is it an aftermarket or is it the "f" model exaust?

also, i forgot to mention that the motor is gonna need to be dissassembled, freshened up with some new gaskets and whatever else it may need to make it a strong runner.  as you can see in the pic below the head gasket leaks pretty bad.  in the pic the bike is running and you can see smoke and bubbles popping through the gasket.   do you guys have any suggestions as to what kind of things i should prolly replace engine-wise?  my direction as of now is too build a cafe bike, but no based on aesthetics only.  i want to build something that is more than just a pretty bike.  i am willing go as far as swapping the cam, but i will not bore it out.

as of now the frame will be powder-coated white, the aluminum will be polished, uneeded #$%* will be cut off.

That is not an F header or muffler.  There were and are 4 into 1 aftermarket  systems available but as to what one that is I am not sure.

yup, im slow.  but if i can ride i'm gonna ride. the bike building can wait until winter has locked me in the basement with my 750...or can i wait?

i have torn everything off of the bike that i wont be reusing except for the front end.  i love the look of the stock tank and will be keeping that.  i will fabricate a tail piece out of an old RV hot water heater and polishing it to keep with the white/aluminum look. 

looks like i will be throwing a front end off of a 2005 zx636 onto this one and may match that with a swingarm off of a 2009 er6n (single-side mounted shock like my Versys).

i have some rear sets off of a 2005 'busa on the way as well.   

i will keep you updated on the front end fittent.

few improvements since the last post.  was able to get a mock-up done.  so im using a 2005 zx6r front end, wheel, brakes, and a 2009 er6n rear swingarm, wheel and brakes.  got everything in place and with the help of a local machinist should fit nice and snug.  the front end will require the steering stem to be milled down to accept the original 750k head bearings and the rear portion of the frame will need to be widened a few mm's to accept the er6n swingarm and shock mount.  overall this is going pretty easy.  at this rate it will be a winter project only and should be on the road for early summer.  here's a few pics of widening the frame, the old front end and finally, the mockup (yes i am keeping the stock tank...i love the look of it.
