Topic: 550 exhaust

hey kids.  picked up a clean '75 550.  only major issue (besides pitted wheels) is the #$%*ty mac 4-1.  the baffle sounds like complete dog #$%*. 

it has bigger main jets since the stock air box has been replaced by pod filters.  runs good, just sounds like a turd.  sounds like someone gargling with marbles in their mouth.  if i remove the baffle, am i in danger of burning up a valve?

also, where am i going to find a nice exhaust system for this bike?  i wonder if it would be possible to do a group buy with kerker?

i've seen benji's.  nice, but too much loot.

Why not bring it back to original 4-4 mufflers, air box and main jets???

I find these bikes with an 4-1 muffler cool on the muffler side, but naked and missing something on the left side. Besides, the 4-4 sound way better and the engine runs good.

the stock exhaust is cool in it's own right, but that's not what i'm after.  the bike will soon have 520 sprockets with nice new gold d.i.d. chain.  new shouldered rims....so i'm not concerned with the left side not looking good. 

i have a mac slip on (installed in '79) on my '77 CB 750F and it's pretty nice sounding compared to this piece of junk on the 550. 

can anyone tell me if removing the baffle could potentially cause me to burn the valves?
