Fuel Tanks interchangable?
« on: January 21, 2006, 08:07:52 PM »
The more I look at my '76 CB550, the less I like the pop-up panel over the filler cap. I saw a 750 tank for sale the other day that looks nice and has the filler cap out there and on top where I like it, and I like the shape. l...So my question is, are tanks interchangable to some extent between 750's to 550's?

Not shure but you could change the mount's pretty easy if it won't.

What's wrong with the 500/550K tank? It'd be a better fit as the frames are all pretty much the same? Same cap as the mighty CB750 too. Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

I believe the tank on the 550F is longer and the seat is shorter than on the 550K.

Easy answer Not without a lot of work
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

Remember "Its always in the last place you look" COURSE IT IS YOU STOP LOOKIN THEN!

I have a 550F, and that flipper door with the filler cap under just bothers me for some reason. I would like to find a tank that fits where the cap is just "out there". My bike is either going to be in my carport or under my ass, so security and locking gas caps aren't needed. I just like to keep things simple in function, or maybe I'm just being a weenie Ebay slut....:)

But you're right... probably more work over a detail than I need. I mean there are more important things for me to do, like stopping Isreal from nuking Iran, finding Osama, replacing that rain gutter over the front door, loosing 20 pounds....sigh.

your right it is shorter, the F seat. I have one on my 72 500K there is a big gap. I'm reduing my seat so this is only temp.

the seat may be different, but the tank mounts are the same on an F frame and a K frame. i know--i have two K's and an F in my garage, which have all been in a big orgy of parts swapping. knowing this wouldn't solve the seat-to-tank fit issues, but you could at least swap the tanks without a problem. by the way, I'm also not terribly keen on the trap door style filler, but i think the F tanks look much better overall than the K tanks. they have a tougher broad-shouldered look to them.

It's a tough choice, because on one hand I would like a more classic Brit bike look, or on the other hand, maybe an art-deco look (whatever that might be..), and hot rod brawny is good too! I think I ran out of hands! I'll just keep my flipper door tank for now. I can hide my butter scotch candy in there.

My 1972 CB750K2 was bought with a K8 tank on it, which will soon
be replaced by my new K4 tank.

Hey pro, what kind of shape is that K8 tank in? Do you have or get any pics of it? I might buy it off you.
