Extra Parts
« on: April 03, 2010, 06:44:17 AM »
Hey All,

I'm in the process of replacing a leaking head gasket on a 1972 CB750K.  I bought an Athena gasket kit which seemed to have all of the right gaskets and rubber parts but I have the cylinder and head back on and I have two very small o-rings left over?  I can't figure out where they go and the manual I have makes no mention of them.  I put o-rings around the inside rear studs under the cyilnder and under the head.  There were 8 more o-ring type gaskets under the head.  There are 6 rubber disks and 4 small o-rings that go under the cam holders.

Did I miss something along the way or do these go to a later model engine?

Thanks,

Mike

Are those the ones under the cam carriers?  If not, where are they?

There should be a couple small ones under the cam towers as mentioned..
I think also on that contershaft bearing holder, under the shifter cover, there is one or two..

You have a one-size-fits all gasket kit............the k2 did not use all of the o-rings..........the head gaskets are specific but if yours had large enouph holes for the o-rings it may be OK..........CHECK the MANUAL for a K2 or be sure you have the correct head.

The holes around the back studs were large enough for the orings that go there if those are the ones you are refering to?

I posted this recently, should apply to your K2.

The small rectangular gasket in the first pic near the bottom of the pic is for the oil pump, it goes between the pump body and the valve body.  If you haven't disassembled the oil pump then you won't need it.

For the o-rings:

One goes between the coutershaft bearing support and the engine case, on the right side of the motor behind the transmission cover (5x2.4mm).

Four go under the camshaft support towers (3.7x1.7 mm  OR  5.8x1.9 in K2 and later).

Two go between the head and cylinder (11x2.5 mm)

Two go between the cylinder and block (11x2.5 mm).

One goes behind the spark advancer shaft where it plugs into the crank (6x2.3 mm).

One goes on the clutch lifter adjusting bolt (5x.24 mm).

One seals the starter to the case (24.4x3.1 mm).

Three seal the oil pump to the motor (size unlisted).

One seals the oil pump leak stopper cap (15x2.5mm).

Two go on the oil hoses (15x2.5 mm).

One goes on the main oil passage collar between the crankcase halves (8x3 mm).

Three are for the oil passage caps (two under the motor, one on the right side) (19.4x2.8)

One goes on the left side oil passage plug behind the alternator cover (11x2.5)

One goes on the oil passage plug at the front of the motor (13x2.5).

One goes on the neutral switch (8x3 mm).

One goes on the oil filter bolt (15x2.5).

That adds up to 26 as you have indicated in your pic. But one MIGHT go on the automatic oiler element inside the final shaft (6.4x3 mm) depending on the year of the motor.

Measure what you have and double-check your parts manual.  I took these sizes from a K0-K2 parts book.

Got another related question.  There were 8 dowels with rubber o-ring like gaskets between the cylinder and block.  What are those?  Are they the oil return galleys.  Also, when I installed the cam carriers there were 2 o-rings under each one but only one o-ring under each looked like it actually has an oil passage.  How does the outside part of the cam carrier get oil?  Finally, is there some way to confirm that the top end is oiling correctly once I get it running again.  I'd hate to have an issue there and ruin my head/cam.  Can I open the valve adjustment caps and see oil moving around in there?

Yes :)

Oil flows up on the "inside" end of the cam carrier, and fills a passageway that ends at the "outside" part at the o-ring.  From this passageway, smaller passages allow the oil to squirt into the appropriate palces.

Got it all back together and running today.  Opened the caps and there seemed to be plenty of oil splashing around in there so I think I'm good.  Thanks to all for the help   :D
