Barn find pictures
« on: April 11, 2010, 04:25:57 AM »
How do I insert pictures of the CB500 I just pulled out of a barn?  I have tried a couple of different ways and can't seem to get the pictures onto this area.  I have saved the pictures from my phone onto both my Desktop and my photobucket.com page.

In Photobucket, hold your cursor over the pic you want to upload. You'll see a little drop down menu . Move your cursor over the one that says "IMG code". Click on it and it should highlight. Copy that code...it should start with [IMG]http://....
Past that IMG code on your thread here and the pic should show up.

I took it through a car wash and cleaned most of the surface crud off of it.  I bought a new battery and after i charged it I put it in temporarily.  Everything lit up - headlights, tail lights, turn signals etc.  It looks like the wiring is in good shape.  Later this week we are going to start looking at what we need to do to get it on the road.

I've got a chocolate fish riding on the fact that if you change the oil and filter, add good gas to the tank, drain the carbs and squirt a little oil into the cylinders...she'll start! ;D
I've found lots of old Honda's kept in dry conditions that just seem to seal up waiting to be run again...always amazes and delights me. :)
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

How much did you pay for it if you dont mind me asking?

I would say you got pretty lucky the bike looks like its in great shape, with the exception of that giant pointy weapon/triangle on the back of it!

I hope all it needs is "oil, gas etc".  That would be great!!  The gas tank has some scratches on it and the side panels are cracked with some pieces broken off.  How much?  I haven't paid anything yet - the current owner is a builder and took it over 20 years ago as a down payment on a house.  He told me if I could get it running to give him $100.00.  I could get more than that just selling parts on ebay.  If I can't get it going - he won't charge me anything.

My 29 year old son tells me the sissy bar has to come off.  I kinda like it - old school, like me.

Give sissy-bar to Mumsie for the garden, let her grow roses around it....it has no place being on a SOHC4 bike ever! :D

the sissy is the best part.  dont touch it.

seriously, ive done it before, to american bikes no less... change the oild, filters, gas, plugs maybe, etc.... and it WILL start.  unless it was parked because something broke, it will run.  these jap bikes sit well.

im assuming the front shocks only look like that because the bike is tied down, but if not you should check it out.

I was going to mention that. It is tied down waaaay too tight in the front. Pull up the gaiters and check out the fork seals to make sure they aren't leaking. Probably will be soon regardless of this. The front should be snug but never bottom out the forks. The rear can be secured much more tightly.

If the front is sucked down 1/2 or 2/3 of the way..

Why? would you have to tie the back down... ???

The bike was on the trailer for a 3 mile trip, so it was tied down for about 30 minutes, including the trip to the car wash.  It will be later this week before we get a chance to start on it again.  I have the oil, plugs etc ready to go - just no time for a few days.  Gotta go to work.  I'm no mechanic, so I really have to wait for my son and a friend of his to be available and they all have their own jobs.

Nice find....

Does it have a clear title?

I'd be a little hesitant to get it running and then agree on pricing.  Too many horror stories of guys spending time and money just to have to return the bike to the "Registered" owner.

That's totally worth a $100 as is with title.  I'd take it and feel better while your working on it.

Nice find! But definitely get the title cleared or an old registration and find the last registered owner to sign it over to you before you do any work!

I have known the seller for 45 years.  He has also built 2 homes for me.  So it is someone I trust.  He has built a reputation over the years doing what he said he would do.  Once we get a spark - he is going to get his $100.  He is actually looking for the title now.

Yah, in the early 70's the sissy bar was the deal. Many bikes had them. I had them mainly so the girls on the back wanted to stay for a while. Of course, if it was a real cute girl I would take it off and tell her to hold on tight. ;D My K4 that I bought for this past winters project had one on when I bought it. I did take it off as I wanted the showroom look. Below is a pic of the K4 when I brought home last summer with the sissy and ugly KQ seat, and then a pic of the bike minus the bar and KQ. Whether you keep the bar or not is your personal choice. Click the pic to enlarge it.
