Topic: Help me with my '75 CB550

To remove stuck float pins this is what I do;

1) Grab one of the float pins you've already removed

2) Lightly hammer that float pin into one of the float pin holders this should slowly push the stuck float pin out.

3) Once the non-stuck float pin is partially through use a set of pliers (one side on the end of the float pin, the other side on the float pin holder) to push the free float pin in and the old stuck float pin should fall out the other side.


To remove the main jets

1) Soak them in WD-40

2) Scrub down the main jet and the main jet holder

3) Soak in some carb cleaner or simple green if you have it

4) Use a hair blow dryer to heat the area

5) Use some pliers and yank



To remove the slides

1) Remove each carb from the carb rack

2) Fold down the locking tab on the nuts that have the arrows pointing to them

3) Unscrew the nuts that have the arrows pointing to them

4) Bring the slide arm up by pulling up on the levers/nuts that are circled in blue in the picture

5) Now you should be able to wiggle the slide off the slide arm






Once everything is removed you should be ready to dip the carbs. By the way which carb body is it that is damaged? #1 has the choke lever on it and is on the left side of the bike when your sitting on the bike. 1,2,3,4

As for which carb, I don't remember off the top of my head. It's the left one in this pic, but as to if it's 1 or 4, I don't know.

Looks like I just bought a set of carbs from a 1976 CB550 for $30 from another member!

I'm also eyeing a set of 4-4 exhaust at my local shop. $50. The only thing is one of the pipes had two holes patched. But it's on the underside of the bottom right pipe.

if you can't see it, ugly is fine. except in the case of mine, where ugly is fine anyway.

that's good. i would feel way better starting with a set in better condition...

exactly.

I was planning on going all out with this bike. make it b-e-a-utiful. but, i'm moving into the city and it would be a diamond in the rough. So i'm thinking about ways to make it still look good and cool, but not to the point of making it worth stealing or messing with.

So $50 pipes sound better every day.

absolutely. you can always save up for a fancy set of pipes... if the $50 set gets you down the road, id jump on that

I finally got all the crap I needed to get my CL350 back on the road, so I just bought stuff for the 550!

New shocks and carb rebuild kits from Parts-n-More!

I figure that's a good start.
Engine gasket kit will probably come next.
