77 CB 550K - ANOTHER FORK SEAL QUESTION FROM ME
« on: April 14, 2010, 06:48:02 PM »
77 CB 550K

OK, I got the old fork seals out finally, that was a chore. I have the new ones to put in. Problem is they look different than the originals and I can't tell which side is up or which side is down. They look very similar from either side with only a slight difference. Does it matter which side goes up or down????

I got the seal from bike bandit. Part number 243400-001

I am so ready to put this back together and get riding again.

The side where you can see the spring is the bottom.

Yep, be sure to polish up those fork tubes real smooth before you put it back together. Doing it twice really sucks. I know that for sure.

I see spring on both sides, thats why this is so confusing. There is some lettering on one side, I'm thinking that might be the top????

Sniper,

I bought fork seals from Honda as well and you're right... Both side are open and both sides have springs.

Here's a discussion on that type of fork seal and how to mount it:
http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=65697.0

Basically, you need to mount the seal so the lettering is up.

I asked questions about WHY it was necessary to do mount the seals this way.  To look at the side profile of the seal, I would have thought to mount them in the opposite direction.  I mounted mine with the lettering facing up.

I'd appreciate any comments and being able to understand this issue better.

On mine I put the inside profile that touches the , up, like this [ /|fork|\ ]<--seal. Kinda crude diagram. Might help. And 2nd on the clean & polish.

Thanks to all on the advice!! I got them put back together and they are working perfectly. One thing I came up with to press in the new seals was some large wood clamps and a piece of PVC (1 1/2") I simply pushed them into place, replaced the clip and good to go!. I used twenty weight oil, and took someones advice to shim the springs a bit. What a difference, the thing rides even better now.

Thank you all again for the assistance!!
