Sounds like you made the right decision.
The years that have passed are also important.
I just took apart my 1978 and it looked good inside but
the rubber cam chain rollers were 33 years old and not to be trusted.
Another member on this forum or another forum had those rollers
come apart and ended up in many pieces in the oil sump.

Did you have trouble with glass beads cumming into the treadholes? And what exactly do you mean by elbow grease? Did you polish?
