Hi from NJ
« on: April 25, 2010, 11:22:53 AM »
Hey. I'm a complete newb to motorcycles who scored a almost free 1978 Honda CB550 K with 89xx miles. It belonged to a guy who is deceased, a buddy of mine was hired by the guys daughter to clean out the shed and this nice bike was sitting in the corner covered by junk. It rolled out of the shed and onto my truck somehow .
So far trying to find the title is the biggest hurdle, the house is a complete mess, I'm talking severe hording, but the daughter is trying. I at least will have a bill of sale if no title pops up.

Now here's the next dilemma, It's been sitting since 1983(date of inspection sticker). I pulled the carbs and cleaned them up and I'm getting fuel flow now, but I must not have cleaned them good enough. One carb is over flowing, I suspect a bad float or dirty valve. The past week I've been working into the night trying to get it to start, cleaned the points, checked the plugs, etc. I got it to start on ether, but she was only running on cylinders 1 and 4, 2 and 3 are dead, I suspect a bad coil. I haven't fully investigated it yet. The inside of the tank is also rusted and I'm having a problem trying to clean it out.

I actually just came back in from cleaning the carbs, they are next to spotless now and all the orifices are clear. I haven't hooked them back up yet, I'm letting the bowls soak as they are still quite dirty.

I really like the look of these bikes and want to get it running and it would be a great bike to learn to ride on.

Welcome aboard!  I'm in NJ too but we're not that close.  Try swapping the coils around to test if that's your problem.  And good luck with the title; I've titled bikes in NJ without titles before from other states but nothing with a lost title.

I made some huge progress. I have a title now.
I also got it running. It will run when the choke is off, but will not idle without stalling.
One cylinder seems to be hit and miss as the header will be warm on one run, and cold on the next.
I'm going to do a compression test sometime this week.

I'm wondering if the bike is even worth it. With a title I can easily double or triple my investment.
