Topic: 1970 or 1978, what should I do

I have a dilemma. 

Bought a 1970 CB750, original frame numbers showed it was definitely a 1970. Went to vehicle license bureau and the numbers showed up as a different owner than the one from whom I was purchasing.  The different owner was the guy who originally sold to the guy who I was buying from, but could not get a hold of
him.  As he was selling various bikes over the past years it is possible he got the wrong ownership.  We know it is not stolen so that is not an issue.

I wanted this bike bad so he got a frame and clear title from a cycle parts shop, we took VIN and put it on the existing frame.  Not a problem, transfer of ownership goes through fine.

My dilemma is that my bike now has a 1978 VIN and I want the old 1970 number so I  can say I have a 1970 CB.  Do you think this is a big deal, or am I making too much of it?  It just bothers me as I now have to say I have a 78 not a 70.

Would it be easier just to find a 70 from with clear title when someone parts out?  Advice?

I see how you can change the VIN plate, but what about the stamped vin on the steering neck?  You can't really change that without cutting off the neck and replacing it with the new one.  Also, who says you have to call it a '78 now?  I doubt anybody besides the DMV is going to check the numbers to see what it's registered as.

Why don't you do one of those title companies that "get" you a new title?  Costs about $150 or so, but if you REALLY want the number on the title to match...

While its all fine and well as long as you own the bike, a possible future sale may run afoul. And yes we are all going to keep everything we own till we die and never sell. But if it should ever happen.......

Of course I will never sell it.  Pass it on to my son, who of course will appreciate it for what it is and not try to by a GSX-R or R1 or whatever.

Gordon, neck was restamped.  The fellow who did is has been restoring Hondas for over 20 years and is well respected in the Canadian Vintage Motorcycle Group so I trust his judgement.  And yeah, the DMV is the only one who cares.  It just bugs me that I have a 70 with a VIN that says 78. 

I was thinking of just getting a 70 frame (damaged or not) that has the title and then restamp the neck.  I will check out the 'net for companies that can get a new title as well.
