Disassembled, cleaned, inspected, and reassembled the oil pump today.  I installed it and put the freshly painted oil pan on as well.  Gotta do something with that drain plug, though.

I have a bit of painting to do on the other engine parts and I just finally got my seal kit.  The engine rebuild should continue once the weather cools a bit.  I still have to clean the fuel tank as it's got some rust inside.  After that, I'm looking for a hex or octagon oil tank and the rest is pretty much just waiting to be assembled.  This summer has been busier than I thought and unfortunately this project has been on the back burner... but not for long.

Looking sweet! Can't wait to see how this one turns out. I am in the middle of a build myself so I love seeing what other people are doing.

Pics coming soon!  Cleaned my pistons with Simple Green; I can't believe how well it worked getting carbon off.  Started disassembling my head and the valves are cleaning up nicely too.  Clutch is back in, shift linkage all together (I hate trying to remember how those springs go), installed some seals, painted most of the rest of the parts, and honed my cylinders.

Here's some pics.  The pistons cleaned up with Simple Green pretty easily.  I love that stuff!  Installed the pistons yesterday.  Disassembled my head today.  It's going off for bead blasting after I clean it tomorrow.

Hey man nice job on the build.  I just got myself a 78 F as well with the same paint as yours.  Are you going to do anything special to the head?  Im taking notes too ;D

Head is not getting any special treatment other than a thorough cleaning and new seals.  When the top end goes out, whenever that is, then I will go to an 836 kit and some serious head porting.  Right now though, I am going to see how it performs stock.  The top end is easy enough to redo.

Put my cylinder block on tonight.  Went smoother that I had anticipated.  The rings cooperated nicely.

Just some more pics.  I have my head out being blasted by Jeff from work who has done all my other blasting work.  Will be making a valve spring compressor while I wait because the Advance Auto Rent-A-Tool POS sucked while removing my valves.

Got my head back from Jeff yesterday.  Amazed again with his work.  I can't stress what a reasonable guy he is.  I had to talk him into charging me at least $30.  He wanted to charge me $25 for doing the head and valves and I told him that was way too cheap.  He said "Fine, gimmie $30."  Pics will be up soon.  He got ALL the carbon, paint, and head gasket material off of it.

So, now I just have to lap the valves, reassemble, and paint it.

Tapped all the hoes in my head and measured valve guide clearance.  Intakes are good, exhausts are trashed.  Son of a ... Looks like a set of valve guides will be coming my way.  Mocked up the rest of the top end just to see how it will look.

Gas tank has been sitting for about 15 hours with phosphoric acid solution inside of it.  Amazing results so far!  Probably give it another 12 hours or so and then turn it over so the top end gets the rust removed well.

Tank is looking GREAT on the inside now!!!  I let the tank sit for 24 hours with about 50% water, 50% Phosphoric Acid and then flipped it upside down for another 24.  Every spot of rust is gone!!!  I rinsed the tank really well with hot water and then coated the inside with some oil to keep any rusting from occuring before it gets fuel in it.  Follow these threads for a quick and easy method to renew your tank too!!!

Steel wool (or even scotchbrite pads) will scratch chrome, and it's a lot of hard work. Get some phosphoric acid and add water at 5 parts water to 1 part acid and dip the rims, fenders, grab rails, blinker stalks, exhaust pipes, handlebars, chain guards, seat bases etc etc in the solution for a few minutes then just pull it out and rinse with clean water, and you'll think it just rolled off the factory floor, no scrubbing or polishing required! Cheers, Terry. ;D

The Home Depot's here in MD are now carrying phosphoric acid in their paint stripping section.  Product is called "Prep and Etch." It is a gentler, more forgiving product than muriatic acid that takes overnight to work but leaves a rust inhibiting coating on the metal.

did this, this weekend. Watch out for flash rusting. I read up on this a while back and it seems that the best acid to use is phosphoric acid as it will remove the rust while leaving the metal in a state that is somewhat inhibitive to oxidatation/rusting. I have done some small parts in phosphoric acid and noted no flash rusting.

Got my valve guides from Cycle X along with the Triangle headlight on their website.  Installed the guides, lapped the valves, reassembled the head, and painted it.  I also just won this oil tank on ebay so we'll try that out.

Digger, I just came across your build, and man, is it SWEET!  I didn't read how you scored the frame.  Another craigslist score?

I love the HEMI orange, too.  The motor looks way nice.

Thanks!  Yeah, the frame is a CL score.  Supposedly it may be a Corbin & Gentry, but I cannot find any identifying marks on it.
