$600? That's a nice springer, but right now I have other stuff to buy if I had $600. I have tossed around the springer idea, but that won't be for a while. I'm trying to get the 78K that I just picked up running smoothly so that I can turn some coin on it and spend more money on this build.

Top end is all buttoned up. Waiting on a new clutch and then this engine will be ready to run.

I didn't like the octagon oil tank with this one. I have a different tank coming so we'll see if I like it anymore.

Damn it's getting cold in the old garage.

Got my new "Super Clutch Kit" from CycleX along with the clutch nut socket. Great price for fiber and steel discs and with a lifetime warranty, I think it's a deal!

So after a long, cold, snowy Chicago winter, an engine top-end repair for a fellow forum member, fixing up the 78K I had, and a bunch of carb rebuilds, I'm finally getting back to the project at hand. I mounted the engine in the frame so that I can figure out what other adjustments need to be made around it. The fuel tank will be fine. The oil tank has some serious chain clearance issues and will be heavily cut on the left side to work. I have to take the rear hub and have almost a half inch shaved off where the sprocket mounts to bring the front and rear sprockets in line. The rear caliper bracket will also need about 1/8" trimmed off.

Wow, it's been a while since I updated this. Here 's what I've done since May. First off, I've found out a lot of differences between the 77-78 rear ends and the earlier models. If you want to run a 78 disc rear wheel in a frame made for a 76 or earlier drum, you need to replace your sprocket carrier and internal spacer with the earlier style, have your left outer spacer and caliper mounting bracket machined down a little, and use the earlier style axle and adjusters. You will also need to fabricate a mounting anchor for the caliper bracket. I wanted mine to sit between the frame tubes. Because of the bleeder position, I also had to use a caliper from the left front.

Other progressions include welding on a steering stop, rear master cylinder bracket, oil tank, rear fender, and kickstand.

The oil tank is one I purchased from CycleX with the chain cutaway already in it.

The kickstand was a splurge from Chassis Design company. It was $160 but it is worth the money. Internal spring and killer looks.

After a weekend of garage time, I have the bike partially assembled. Electrical to do, oil lines, fuel lines, and brakes are left. My goal is to get a few weeks of riding in this fall to see what changes need to be made, make them, and then tear down for painting.

Oh, and the Mac 4 into 1 that I thought I would use has NO ground clearance here. So, I will be going another route. I like the CycleX 4 into 1 they are working on, but I haven't heard any updates.

Of course you did not find anything on the internet about those frames,it was BEFORE the internet.

People just did things. They did not keep logs and blogs and document stuff. To find out about that you would go down to your local coffee shop or bar and get the latest exciting stories about who was doin what.

Remember "CAFE" racer. Duh..... The CAFE was a happening place with bikes and stories and chicks and creative stuff. It was a happening place. A social place.

Looks like you need the 2 into one times two solution. two pipes on each side or one big pipe on each side. Perfect.

Thanks for the advice, but I am not a big fan of 2 into 1's on inline fours because they don't join companion cylinders. In order to really reap the benefits of combining exhausts, you would need to combine 1&4 and 2&3.

It's going to be 4 into 1 or drag pipes for me.

WIRING IS DONE!!! Actually it wasn't that bad. The hardest part was getting the seat back on. Tomorrow I will fill 'er with oil, hook up the fuel lines, and hopefully breath life into a 33 year old engine!

After that all that will be left to do on the bike will be the Stop and Go. The brakes need to be rebuilt and installed and I need a new chain and some sprockets.

I like it "as-is". Paint is such a commitment. Leave it with the 'ridden hard and put away wet' look. Keep everyone guessing who the bada$$ is on the bike. Dont ever let anyone start a conversation with you about "American Chopper"....oh you should paint it like; "did you see that episode of American CHopper with the paint job bla bla bla nub?"
Digger is digger as a digger does. Paint is for choppers and resto guys.
