Need PC Help!
« on: May 04, 2010, 06:29:06 AM »

I don't know what to do. My cursor is, at times uncontrollable, just locks in place or goes over to one side and makes moves that I don't initiate. Then, sometimes, several different things will flash up on the screen as if I had selected them and I haven't. Sometimes I can use the "Enter" button to get control and sometimes I can't Sometimes the "Esc" will help, sometimes it won't. I tried unplugging the Mouse and reconnecting it and it worked for a little while. Now, that doesn't help. I can't shut the PC down, when this is happening, without simply unplugging it. Sometimes, it will go for a few hours with no problem and then it starts all over again. I'm using Firefox and they have recently made updates and I don't know if it's related or not. Any input here would be appreciated. I hope to avoid taking it and getting everything removed and start all over again, as I didn't do a backup disc like I should have. As a last resort, I guess I might have to do just that.     HELP.

I would recommend using a free anti virus software and do a total scan, like AVG http://www.avg.com/us-en/homepage. But to be honest that doesn't really sound like a virus, what kind of mouse are you using? What kind of mouse pad?

I've seen on some laptops the touch pad will act funky. For example: you could press down on the far right side of the wrist rest and it would preform a click and move the mouse around.

If it is a laptop, pay attention to where your hands are at the point where it starts acting up. You could even try an external mouse and see if the problem is still existent.

Heat usually explains why a computer will work fine for a bit after it's just been turned on but then acts up after in use for a certain amount of time. A few things you can do are double check the fans, make sure they're all running, and take some compressed air and blow out the computer.

Let us know what you find.

How old is the computer? Specs? It could just be finally taking a dump.

There is usually driver updates from the mouse manufacturer as well. That is what I had to do. I have a microsoft Arc mouse, it is wireless and it worked fine then one day it didn't. I downloaded the driver updates and presto chango it was fine again.

Actually, it sounds like the cord of the mouse is starting to short out. It happens.
Try another mouse and see if it's fixed.
No.

Well guys, I've been offline for a bit because the thing just would not move the cursor at all. There is a place nearby and I took it to him. Yep, the mouse was going south. He also saw some potential problems, took care of them, He saw that Norton was trying to get me to renew and eliminated that, while installing a free antivirus and did some upgrades as well. He cost me $38.15 and WalMart got about $18 for a new mouse with the USB plug (which the guy recommended as well. Said they work better that the standard type. So, I'm back on and things are working great, I'm up to 5 on my Ignore list and all's right with the world. 8) ;)  I want to thank you all for your input, even though I couldn't get back on to see it.

If the mouse were an old one, I was going to suggest cleaning its balls;D Seriously though, old ones with the roller ball sometimes get a cat hair or something stuck between the ball and rollers and act crazy.

Clean the wheel and rollers on the inside of the mouse if it isn't an optical mouse.

Sounds like what we use on the laptop. Don't forget to turn off the switch on the mouse when you're not using it. Saves batt power.

Yeah, it was an optical mouse and it work's beautifully now, with a new one. 8) ;) Sure am glad that's all it was, I could just see that it was some kind of virus that would involve wiping out everything on the PC and start from scratch again! :o I was starting to get depressed, as I am pretty good at suspecting the worst! :-\ Doesn't help that I know just enough about pcs, to get into trouble! ::)

Yeah, I've heard about those viruses and was afraid that I had gotten one. But fortunately, with a new low priced mouse from WalMart, I'm back up and running great! ;)  Never forget you sending me that PC either Paul. ;)
