MileHigh Cafe
« on: May 07, 2010, 12:13:40 AM »
Hello all,
I am posting my intro and a few pics of my K8.  I purchased it last fall from the second owner with about 8700 miles on it.  It had been stored inside all its life and was a great starting point for my Cafe project.  I rode the bike last year pretty much stock and waited for fall to turn into winter so I could start my project.

I am doing this a bit backwards, most people bring home the bike, take a bunch of pics and start a thread of what they are doing along the way.  Honestly I didnt have time to take a bunch of pictures and post, but I will filter in pics and answer any questions about the build.

Here are some of the bigger details of the build.
Carpy's Dunstall Tank
Carpy's Rocket Four seat modified to fit yours truly's butt
Carpy's Clubman bars shortened and with Cycle X old school grips.
Carpy's 4 into 1 exhaust, yet to install baffle...what...what you talking to me....huh??
Frame "Cafe'd" all brackets removed and every weld smoothed.  Too many countless hours spent for very subtle effects..
Frame powdercoated black with clear coat
Carbs completely rebuilt currently testing out 120 mains
New Cycle X Engine gaskets
Power Arc ignition
Cycle X Pods
Custom gauge mount, polished alum with lower closer gauge stance. Led indicator lights, Cycle X Chrome gauge covers
Custom fabbed rear shocks and springs to lower 1.5 inches
Forks rebuilt
Solid bronze swingarm bushing, roller bearing headset
Custom rearsets fabbed from CBR 929RR with welded mounting tabs
Front SS brake lines, new pads, fluid
Oregon Motorsports reg/rec
Modern blade fuse box
Odyssey 680m battery with aluminum battery tray
All the electronics have been modified to fit under the rear hump.  The wires soldered and lengthened to get back there.
I have a few mock up's of a custom oil tank (similar to Timdhawk) but have yet to install it.  My stock oil tank is in place for now as I wanted to actually ride the bike.

As you can see the everything aluminum has been polished, man I spent more hours then I care to remember standing in front of the buffer this winter.
I painted the seat and tank, color sanded and polished them.  I think the checkered board came out pretty good.  What you can do with 1" tape and some patience...
Most everything else has been powdercoated.  My buddy has a garage oven and we went at it.

Over all, I am happy with the way the bike came out.  It was my first build and taught me so much.  Last fall, I didn't know my rectifier from my rectum!
I am looking forward to riding the bike here in Denver for the next few weeks, and then I will be moving to the SF bay area this summer, maybe I will have to change my screen name.

Thanks for looking.

Way cool Tom, it looked great a month ago but now... holy smokes. You're going to be able to raise a lot of hell on that thing.

Let me know if you want to go for a ride sometime before you move out west.

Hello all,
I will post some more pics of the bike soon, I only have phone internet acess now with getting ready to move.

I have a question for the tuner people out there.....
With my Power Arc ignition set, I have it wired for the "medium" curve, I have pods and I am running my exhaust with open baffle.
I installed 120 jets for the first 25 miles and ran it to see how it ran.
After the bike was warmed up, running around town it started cutting out if I gave it gas, popped and sputtered. I limped it back home and pulled the plugs. They were white as a ghost!!

Installled 130s and went back out for a ride. Wow the powerband was so much better, the bike was faster then my expectations! It ran very well but then after I was out riding for 20 min, it started to pop again in the upper RPMs. I didn't check the plugs yet but expect I am still running lean in upper RPMs.

My question is, given the mods, is it unheard of to run 140s or higher on these bikes? Is there any other reason it maybe doing this? The Power Arc ignition gets set based off of TDC one number one pistion, then the optic wheel turned until the TDC light goes on, so I assume my timing is accurate.
I have my pilot set at stock 1.5 turns out.
Thanks in advance....

Just an after thought on what riding conditions were from above post.
Mile high Denver, low humity, about 58 degrees and breezy. I don't think breezy enough to effect pods all that much, but I suppose it is possible.

Thanks again.

Have your pod filters been oiled?

If not, try that first.....then step out your jetting again.

I havnt touched the pods since buying them from Cycle X. I have K&N oil, but I don't think that would change much. Please explain your theory behind that?
I'm not being rude, please don't think that, but what would that do?
Thanks!

Took out the old plugs this morning. Then new plugs and 130s in it. Ran longer before it started popping and sputterin. I'm goin to ride it again, I noticed the fuel line had a rise in it, or hump where the inline filter was resting on the carbs. I'm going to try different fuel line without filter.
When I pulled the plugs after this mornings ride, they were still white!! Not as bad as with the 120s in, but unless it was simply fuel starving due to the line, I'm thinking I need to go up on jet size more. Sound about right??
Anything else I may be missing??

Thanks

Welcome Mile High. I don't think I would worry about it too much because you will just have to do it all over when you get out here to sea level.

Thanks for the kind words. I promise I will post more pics when I can this week. I know how much I look forward to peoples pics and get inspiration from them.

Just took bike for another test beat, after 20 min of spirited riding, the popping was just starting. I assume its because the bike is hot from running lean. I notice the exhaust note sounds higher, and at lights it revs higher, about 500 RPM or so higher then when its warm, but not hot.

I will order jets this week, high enough for when iam at sea level as I will need to rejet once there.
I'm really thrilled with the performance of the Power Arc, Carpys exhaust and pods. It has make this a totally different bike.  I can't wait to feel the power at sea level!!
Thanks
