Removing baffles on stock 4-4??
« on: May 08, 2010, 09:09:58 PM »
I have a 550 and stock 4-4 exhaust. Would like to build something like those CR750 pipes, but money sucks.... So I Was thinking about removing the baffles for (hopefully) a more louder and meaner sound. Would this cause any problems? And has anyone else done this??

Any feedback appreciated!

I usually pull em on 750s. The bike I borrowed last August, I pulled the baffles before I even rode it!

I guess pretty soon my buddy is gonna want that bike back... >:(

If they are in good shape dont chop them up. (Depending on the year anyways, do you have a 74-76 or a 77-78?) At least sell them and you could buy 2 or 3 sets of rusted out old ones to make the pipes you want. Besides you cant really just pull the baffles out like you can a 750. This is assuming you have the early style pipes.

If you have the late style, its a bit easier. The real work is that you are going to have to re-tune the carbs because of the change of exhaust flow. It will probably make your bike go slower or have an incorrect mixture at certain throttle ranges (without any engine mods).

Just sayin'

The pipes are from a 77. They are in good shape.... ;D

How loud would the pipes be if they were taken out?

Would I have to cut the end "cone" off, disassemble the baffles, then weld the cone back together?

Probably won't end up doing this, but whatever.........
