Synching Carbs Question
« on: May 10, 2010, 04:45:16 PM »
I'm trying to synch my carbs using an old motion pro mercury monometer and have some questions. I've been trying to tune my carbs at about 1.5-2k RPM;

-What RPM should I set my bike to when synching the carbs?

-I have lots of little bubbles in my mercury and when the bike starts some of the lines of mercury have lots of air spaces in them. Should I just take the reading at the top of the mercury or do I need to fix this?

-My mercury levels are constantly bouncing around and I can here my engine speed slowing and speeding up constantly how do I stop this?

-I know the bike should be warmed up before synching but should the choke lever be up or pushed down while synching? (Im guessing pushed down)

-What RPM should I set my bike to when synching the carbs? i try at idle, then at about half throttle

-I have lots of little bubbles in my mercury and when the bike starts some of the lines of mercury have lots of air spaces in them. Should I just take the reading at the top of the mercury or do I need to fix this? need to fix this for a correct reading, try tapping on them

-My mercury levels are constantly bouncing around and I can here my engine speed slowing and speeding up constantly how do I stop this? you need to use the dampeners, small twist valves that should be installed on each tube to the carb

-I know the bike should be warmed up before synching but should the choke lever be up or pushed down while synching? (Im guessing pushed down) should be warmed up to the point where the choke is fully open

With my mercury tool  I loaned it out and  when it came back the mercury was sucked out and I had bubbles and it was no longer any good.  I use 1000 to 1500 RPMs to sinc carbs.  Mercury is no longer available to buy.  I am afraid your sync tool is not working and without  a refill it will not work.  Yeah, I tried with mine. Not good.  I brought the Motion Pro new one without mercury and you need to be careful about sucking that out, too,  I wish I went with the more expensive vacuum gages.  I hook up only after the the bike is warmed up.  Use a fan on the engine.  Keep the RPMs down when blipping the throttle.  Important to do after adjusting the linkage.
Good luck!

The mercury on this syncher got poured out and I was able to get some more. I've tapped the heck out of the tubes and there are still bubbles in them. I guess I just need to get a new tuner! Thanks for the input!
