man! i got bitten by a rotwieler yesterday at work,i drive a skip bin truck,ive been to this job before ,a private house and have seen the dog chained up,nice house and suburb,so i lifted the bin onto the truck and the unchained dog wanders over,there were tradesmen working with electric tools and all so didnt think anything of it,so i pat the dog on the back off the neck saying something like "your a big dog arent you" as im tying down the load cover,it wanders off and i finish tying off and about to jump in the truck and it wanders back,i gave it a goodbye pat and the thing bit my hand causeing a big skin flap type cut on my right thumb and scratches on my left forearm as i sort of turned away,i told it to phuck off!no stitches but a tetanous shot which was worse than the bite,we dont have rabies here ,first dog bite ever in my life!

That bite is worth a few thousand bucks from the homeowners insurance company. Did you file a police report?

no johnie,i was pissed of though,but i calmed down,i love animals,a split second in my head said kick the thing,it stopped as soon as it started though, guys on site working rang the owner,so did my boss(we have a dedicated two way),the owner was deeply concerned,the local council can declare a dangerous dog and the yearly registration goes from say five dollars to 250!,dogs can be put down for truly savage attacks without the victims approval,im not frightened of dogs,i could have pulled a steel bar or chain of the truck and clobbered this dog with no come back legally,this is australia,and she:ll be right.

And it undergoes a nut-ectomy, gets a chip implant, and a shiny red and gray collar, and the owner has to put up signs.

But I can't understand the psychology of the McMansion owners who see this breed as part of their sense of self, of having arrived!

I just have 2 cattle dogs: a Red and a Blue.

yeah ,the guys on site working didnt believe it either,i have a staffy,old english fighting dog,hes a wimp,but confident and strong, we still do not trust him with strangers untill were sure its all cool,takes about thirty seconds,the owners werent home might be a factor?

Sorry to hear that Dave,.... I agree dogs are not ' yard ornaments' and should never be chained-up anywhere. Dogs are pack animals and need to be with the pack ( the family). To chain and isolate a dog is the most cruel thing you can to it, period. ( I might feel strongly about this !)..... A dog that is chained won't know how to act when released and would be unsocialised around humans and other dogs.
Shame on the 'owner' !.... should be fined, at least, sued would be better.

yeah well dukie,it sort of came up to me and the rest is history,ive patted heaps of dogs just doing this job,for near eight years,plenty have been big dogs and really receptive,just a bad day for the pair of us, a free ranging dog,hey who knows?my dogs smell on me?truck noise?ive forgiven,but more carefull now,if i were wearing gloves?i also got bitten by a bird about three years ago,about to knock on a door to pick up a bin,this wacky bird in a cage says to me,"scratch scratch"so i go to scratch it and get bitten!what am i? pet food?

I'm not trying to beat you down on it but I personally have a policy of not touching animals without the owner around and introducing me to them.
You get bit a couple of times you hopefully learn your lesson, if not you'll continue to get bit and wonder why.

thats cool dukie, when a dog presents itself,and accepts a pat,then returns for another,and it bites you,i think your right,ive always been a dog owner,and ,i would hate someone to clobber my dog if it bit them,i could have easily killed that dog,and been within the law,ill keep your advice in mind.

ive been a dog lover all my life but since a dog bite i approach strange dogs with a little different attitude.... once i saw this dog chained up it was a cool looking dog it seemed happy that i was appraoching it after i got just close enough to pet it it got this strange look in his eye and made me a little weary of touching it.. i stepped back and some thing caught my attn in the other direction... lucky for me i had just stepped out side his radius because he jumped and his the end of his chain mid air about a foot away from my face(i was still hunched over)  i spent the rest of the day thinking what if that chain was just a little longer.... i didnt intentionally stepp out of his radius but im sure glad i did

Dukie, any dog that is loose is the responsibility of the owner. The person recieving the bite is not at fault, no matter if they move to pet the dog or not..... if your dog is loose you better make dang sure it's no threat to anyone, keeping it chained-up would never achieve that goal, only teach the dog to bite 'cos it feels threatened 24/7.

When I was stationed on Vancouver Island I got my ankles bitten by a weiner dog who penetrated the shoe leather and my ankle, I was really pissed, I was wearing my best pair of socks and shoes so I thought about going back with a stick and smacking it, so next time I go past the sneaky little bugger pops out from a hedge and of course I couldn't grab the stick in time so I get bitten again, but this time I've got my boots and it doesn't break the skin I look down and the S.O.B. is still trying, so I edge towards it, figuring maybe he'll get tangle up in the spokes or chain, then I found out he couldn't think of two things at once he couldn't set himself to jump so I keep on edging closer and closer by this time I'm running out of road because of a ditch and the dog starts to fall over the edge so I speed up and take off I found out at that point if you play it right you can run dogs that are chasing you into ditches or hedges or what have you and you know if you run one into ditch they wont come near you again, plus the owner can't say much.

i took a moto saftey course offered by PA and they said if you come up on a dog slow down and as soon as its close gun it... they said dont try to kick it... it will just knock u off balance

A work colleague who has lived with Rottweillers all his life calls it Rottweiller 101 :- Never ever pat a Rottweiller on the head/back of neck, they don't like it and you are almost guaranteed to get bitten. Pat them on the flank or the side of the rump which is a friendship contact. Head/back of neck is a dominance contact.

Cant say I much care for short hair breeds like that. Seen too much bad from rotts and pits and dobermans. Just seem to be untrustworthy. I know I am sure someone will jump on me about that and go off on a tangent about proper training and this and that and how they have never scene one attack anybody and how it was the sweetest dog they had.
Good for them. I HAVE seen rotts attack. Even people they have known a long time.
Not only that, but I don't have the time to blow trying to train a dog like that when I can get a something like a husky or malamute which can learn on the fly and rarely attack unless provoked intentionally. I feel some dog breeds ARE better than others. I would never hesitate to put a child with a siberian husky. Might have something to do with the fact I grew up with 4 of them and aside from 1 just being kinda dumb, they were all like babysitters on 4 legs. Same with the Cocker I had when young. That dog saved my can from a mama raccoon.

I guess my point is if someone wants a dog like a rott, then they better be prepared for potential issues and some dogs are better than others, especially for families.

Dog bite stories always make me feel kind of bad.

That owner was being irresponsible, leaving him out and about.  Period.  Reporting these bites is also kind of a tricky thing.  When I was a kid, one of my sister's friends had her mom and little sister at our house (one of the few times folks came over) and the little kid accidentally stepped on our old, arthritic samoyed's paws.  He was asleep at the time, it scared and hurt him so he snapped at her, and bit her face.  It wasn't bad, but she needed a couple stitches and had to report it to the police.

Because I was a kid, I don't know if it was a matter of our homeowners insurance going up, or what it was, but we ended up having to put the dog down, and he'd been "our puppy" since I was five.

Sammies aren't even a "vicious" breed, so who knows what would happen to that Rott if this got reported.

most reported dog bites are from golden retreivers according to my neighbor/animal control officer. mainly because theres so damn many of them. i wont jump on anyone for their breed preferences but the best, most docile dog i ever knew was my former brothers rottie. she even let the kittens hang off her ears by their claws and she didnt care. i still love greyhounds the best though.
