Hey everyone, just got this bike a week or so ago and started getting my hands dirty.  There's not a whole lot to document so far but a little progress has been made.  Carbs are off.  In the process of cleaning them out.  I already found that the linkage between two of the carbs is broken, so one won't lift.(funny....the PO said it ran fine until he parked it  >:( )  Oh well, found a donor carb at a local scrap yard so that shouldn't be too tough.  I'll keep you updated when I can on my progress.  I've read many of your threads and I appreciate everyone's valuable info.  Like I said, first build, I'm a newbie, all your input is certainly welcome.  BTW, In the process of my build, I should have some parts I'm willing to sell so keep an eye out, I'll be posting them as i go. Thanks guys.

My plan is to get the damn thing running first. :) I love the cafe look, but I also appreciate the preservation of character on a stock bike.  I hope to do a little of both.  Cafe bars and seat, maybe a few other subtle mods but keep the stock tank and battery covers.  I think going too crazy with custom parts and hiding the fact that I own a 1977 cb550 would be foolish.  Thanks for the welcome and I hope to keep everyone updated on the progress.

Welcome!! Im in Utah also, up in the valley! it seems as though these bikes are really making
a come back though I don't know if they really went anywhere!

Check out my project I just took her out for her first test ride in over a year!

Good luck with the project and if your looking for some clubman bars I have an extra set laying
around I would be interested in selling.

Gary.

I would be quite interested in those bars!  Do you know the dimensions and if they'll fit around the big ol' stock gauges on my 550?  And where are you in UT?

Hey guys just a quick update of what happened over the weekend.  Got the carbs all cleaned out and pretty, but I didn't rebuild anything because I was hoping a good cleaning would be enough for a while.  So I threw them back on and checked the plugs.... ew.  Cleaned them off a little and threw 'em back in.  Said a prayer, turned the key, hit the button and......... AAAHHH YEEEAHHH!!!  She started!  Not running beautifully yet obviously but this is progress.  I'll get some new spark plugs on Monday.  The carbs are still peeing on my garage floor so it looks like i'll have to order some kits but that's expected.

Also took some time to deuglify it by removing some of that unnecessary crap.  The PO had that nasty sissybar/backrest welded to the stock grab bar so it came off along with the blinkers, brakelight, chainguard, and muffler.  It's so much easier to see the vision when all that stuff comes off!  Anyways, till next time I'll be waiting for my carb kits, pods, and seat to arrive so till then.... Happy wrenching.

Here is what it looks like after today's strip session:
