Carb rebuild items
« on: May 20, 2010, 08:20:28 AM »
Hey guys! I'm having my buddy rebuild my carbs for me which he's totally capable of doing. He's not completely familiar with this bike (dirt bike mechanic) and told me to just find out what parts I'm going to want to replace. The carbs are off a bike I've never had running so I don't know how they are. They don't look fantastic so I'd rather just redo everything I can right upfront. Do it all the first time and don't worry about it later =P

I found some of the kits and stuff on eBay. Any specific ones tried or recommended. Any I should stay away from? Could I get a quick run down of what I'll want to replace? It's for a 75 CB550 btw.

Thanks in advance!

how come you're not doing it yourself? :P
you really want to test a friendship over a carb rebuild when you get stranded for the first time?!?!?   :D  must be a good friend. hope he comes to get ya!  ;D

if at all possible, buy HONDA rebuild kits, as jet sizes and needle tapers have been known to be different enough in some aftermarket kits to cause A/F mixture problems.
if you have to buy aftermarket, at least try to reuse your needles and jets.

Unless there is internal corrosion, ALL the metal bits inside them are best to remain stock Honda.  It is only the rubber pieces that must be renewed every 20 years or so.  Honda sells kits for each carb to address this.

If you are changing the exhaust and air filter type, then the internal metering sizes may need to be changed depending on the characteristics of those other changes.  Stock values do not apply when changing away from stock configuration.

If you are rebuilding carbs from another model to put on your bike, then you may also need different internal parts.
The carbs should be stamped 022A for K model and 069A for an F model.  Internal parts are different between these models to correspond to the difference in exhaust type.

Ahh, that's good to know!

It's an F, but the exhaust is done for so I don't know what I'll end up with. I'd prefer something a little more performance-y (errr..)
but haven't figured it out exactly.

I'll most likely go through the whole set of carbs with him. I just don't trust myself for the first time around =P

Best place to get the kits?

Honda parts are the best but are $$$.
Keyster rebuild kits work just fine and save $$$. Just don't use their needles.
That is the only part you should buy from Honda or Keihin.
But needles very rarely wear out so you shouldn't have to worry about it.
