Tribute to men who raced the 24 hours of Oss in Holland
« on: May 22, 2010, 08:32:11 AM »
Am a bit excited, for Sunday and Monday during Dutch Championship races at Oss in the south of the Netherlands there will be a tribute for and by the 'iron' men of yesteryear who competed in the tough 24 hour races in the late 60's up until the last one in 1975.
During the festival one of my heroes of the day, Tonny van Schijndel, winner of two 1st (1972 and 1975) and 2 more podiumplaces, will ride my replica.
For you guys over there wont say much, or nothing at all, but for me is a great honour. Hope all the preparing will pay off.

Rob

If it were my replica, I'd get them to sign the seat and then I'd hang it on the wall for all to see.

Excellent Rob. No seat sniffing after. ;) ;) ;D Seriously...good for you sir. I almost got Mike Baldwin (one of my heroes) to ride my 750 in 1987 but it didn't work out. I do have a big poster from 1983. I'll never forget that while I was speaking with him at a campground at Loudon a guy on a huge Harley chopper rides by on the main road and, out of the blue, yanks a 45 degree wheelie for 2 telephone pole lengths. Christ...the guy was doing 45 or 50 mph when he yanked it.  Mike Baldwin looks at me and my friends and says "Did you see that!!". He then said theses modern bikes are easy to wheelie but that shet takes real skill. This from a guy that was an American F1 Champion and GP winner! Funny stuff. He was a real nice guy to have a beer with and take a few pics with too.

One of these  'iron men of yesterday'  will ride my CB750 F2 820cc there.
I don't know who.
I lent my bike to the organisation of the event.
I hope they give the bike a good threatment.

So, just got home from a exciting weekend. The 'man' rode the bike and man was I honoured by that.

It is hard to express what it does to you when your all time hero walks up to you and immediately breaks the ice by saying how much he feels honoured by being invited to ride the bike. He is way in his sixties and still fits in to his leathers from 30 years ago ??? How does he do that?
For me it was a weekend with his ups and downs, Tonny van Schijndel was way up, but we ran into problems with the bike! Bike starts like a charme, just one stroke with the kickstarter and runs beautiful, and the sound it just BITES! A real crowd pleaser, when warmed up and ridden to the grid got a lot of cheers. Goose bumps! But then after a lap or two starts to misfire which gets stronger and stronger 'till she just stops. #$%*................ bring her back to the area where the bikes are showed all weekend, start her up and........ runs great >:( >:( According to Tonny she runs very well, steers great and is stable, but after these two laps.......
Checked all I could think off, and got a lot of help from guys who just came in to assist. Life can be nice. But all to no availle we kept running into the same problems over and over, finally I think I have a problem with the Dyna "S". Have to check, but it was a great way to fill your weekend.

Indeed, was nice to meet you there.
Jan Wagemakers was very pleased with the bike and the performance.

Nicely done guys, sounds like a great weekend. Looks like Rene's header is a little bit thinner in one spot now too. Sorry about your problems though Rob, If it's actually a Dyna problem that's a pain. I wonder if these products are being produced elsewhere  :P, because I have heard of several failures in the last couple years. Me thinks this outfit better pull up their socks!

nice shots! and sorry to hear about your woes Rob,

I'm with brent on the dyna's. too much trouble from too many people with dyna's down here too, guys swapping ign plates and problem still there. maybe it's a late bad batch but many seem to suffer from heat after a while.

If I understand right, they have the triggering transistors sitting together with the sensor blocks inside the cover. doesnt sound too healthy for electronics,

sticking to my used sport bike external black box ignition for the time being....

Hey TG,

Well tonight I'm changing to a Boyer ign with external box just to see if it stays in one piece with that. Do not know how to 'dry' test a Dyna to see if it's broken.
but the look on the face of Tonny when I first started the bike for him, unforgettable, like a child in a candystore! He never raced in 30 years but after one lap used all the rubber! Must be in his blood.

Jan has indeed made my header a little thinner , also the dynamo cover.
It's that old riding style , knees against the tank instead of knee down by those 'old' guys.

You old softie ;D ;D ;D As you all know, I'm a drag racer and sprinter, usually in a straight but I do do the odd twisty sprint.
In the old days it was not so much knees down, more like knees out, both of them going into the corner to aid braking. As you tipped it in, the outside knee would come back to the tank and as you shifted your body weight slightly, your inside toe would be feeling for the track surface because the next thing to touch down would be your foot peg...and then you'd be on your a$$. :D

Warming up 'the lady' was well received by the spectators.

Tonny is waiting in the background.
