CB750 K4 Clutch Interlock Switch...
« on: May 23, 2010, 06:21:06 PM »
 Another electrical question...

I mounted up a new saftey switch.  The one that makes you pull the clutch lever in before the starter motor will turn.  I tested the switch by attempting to turn the engine over with the clutch lever out.

Engine still cranked.  I thought it wasn't supposed to if I don't have the clutch handle pulled back.  Isn't this the safety fuinction this switch should perform?

I am concerned that I didn't re-install the new switch the way I should have.  A few differences...

The new switch has one green w/yellow stripe wire, the other wire is black.  The original switch was a solid green wire and a green w/red stripe wire.

Where do should I plug the new switch wires?  I took notes and re-installed the way I believe they were originally...  I remember the one wire (green) going to a green multi-plug, one in that allowed four others (one to four) to attach.  The other wire, green w/red stripe going to a green w/red stripe that allowed two others (one to two) to attach.

 Thanks again!

Scott

If the trans is in neutral, the starter will crank whether or not the lever is pulled in. If the trans is in gear, then you should have to pull in the lever before the starter cranks.
Don't fix it if it ain't broke!

Scottly,

My trans WAS in neutral when I attempted my test... A poorly performed test on my part.   :-[

System worked as it was supposed to!

 Off to try again!

Thanks.

I have the opposite problem as the OP. I just replaced my battery and, although in neutral with a green light, starter button produces nothing. Pull clutch handle and it starts right up.

I assume this suggests that the Starter Motor Safety Unit is not satisfied by the tranny being in neutral. Where should I look? It could be the thing down by the oil pan (neutral switch) or the wire coming from it. I don't see how it could be any other thing (aside from a bad safety unit, but I imagine that thing would not let me start at all if it were bad.)

Help?

Bob,

Check the wiring diagram.  It could be that the wiring between the switch (under the oil pan on a 750) to the dash is fine, but the wiring between the switch and the safety module is out of order.

Here are some notes on my experience with changing the clutch lockout switch in a 750K4.  http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=73447.0
Can I have a motorcycle when I get old enough?
If you take care of it.
What do you have to do?
Lot’s of things. You’ve been watching me.
Will you show me all of them?
Sure.
Is it hard?
Not if you have the right attitudes. It’s having the right attitudes that’s hard.
