CB175 Value?
« on: June 14, 2010, 07:39:33 am »
I've got a friend that has a 1972 CB175, restored and in fantastic condition, with original paint on tank and sides. Really needs very little, but does have a sticky title situation (original was lost I think, and he's had trouble getting it titled). Assuming that the title could be worked out, what's a ballpark value for such a bike?

The VJEMC price guide is not gospel but will give you a ballpark. It lists that bike mint at $1,200. $900 for class 2, and $700 class 3. Your friend would do better if he squared the title around before the sale.

(Will be understood only by Oz riders).

Without a title, it's a parts bike worth around $150.

Otherwise, I was going to say around $900-$1000.
Dude- your 8 layers are showing!

Mistake: it's a CL175.

Where is the VIN on the frame on these bikes? Did it ever move around... can't find it.
Also, these the original carbs for this bike? Any ideas on year? Thanks!

I had the same CL175 scrambler same paint scheme only mine was the blue. I think it is a 1972 or 1973. My first guess is 1972 as that was the year I got mine. Looks like the original carbs to me. Not original handlebars of course. Rear brake lever may hit the ground when going around corner  ;D See if he has the front fender and bars for you. No title I would pass. Just not worth the hassle. If he feels it is no hassle then let him get the title. Once he has it then deal with him. Bike not worth top dollar in current condition. Worth more if all OEM parts. I think you will need to replace exhaust to be legal. I think they would be to loud for the cops where I live. VIN is usually on the steering stem neck. If it is missing bike could be hot. Be careful...you could end up trying to have the DMV title it and find out it is stolen. Then they notify the police and your bike is gone.

Thanks for the info. As far as I can tell, the VIN stamp on the neck must have been painted over? The bike was obviously being restored at one point; frame has fresh paint, and was fairly polished up (dirty now from sitting). Was going to attempt to get a title in TN - they're pretty slack. Read that some bikes back then were titled using the engine #. Is there any way to check the VINs on these older bikes? I've been looking but haven't turned up a thing yet...

Oh, and what are the chances/expenses of finding the original CL exhaust?

I have seen the OEM exhaust on eBay. Could give Western Hills Honda in Ohio a try as they bought up a lot of vintage parts from dealers. Otherwise try www.cmsnl and David Silver Spares. If you have a friend or someone who knows a cop you could have them run the VIN or engine number to see what it turns up. Hopefully not a hot bike. It concerns me that someone restoring it painted over theVIN. Usually when restoring, cycle buffs know not to paint over that information, unless they do not want someone to see the numbers???

Mr mayor, I have your exhaust. It's in pretty good shape. I also have a rolling chassis with your missing headlight bucket and some other stuff for that bike. If you are interested in any of it, let me know.
