What lights should be on in 'P' Switch position?
« on: June 19, 2010, 06:39:32 am »
My 1974 CB750 just failed it's MOT - one of the reasons was nothing happened when the light switch
was in the 'P' position. The low and High beam worked OK. The inspector said there perhaps should
be a seperate bulb (parking light) in the headlight unit for this. I can not see anywhere to fit this.
Head lamp unit is stock as far as I'm aware... So what should I be exactly seeing when it's in this
position? I'm assuming the rear light and a dimmer than low beam light from the front?

I have the same bike, but I do not have a "P" on my OEM light switch as you indicate. There is a position on the ignition switch where the tailight will be on as a parking light and you can remove the key. There are no lights on in the front in that position. Your examiner will need to brush up on his vintage bikes. The owners manual lists the same information.

I thought in the UK that the CB's had a dual-filiment bulb in the front. A 4 watt parking and 45-60 (?) watt lo-hi beam?

Yes, I just have the low and high beam filament in mine. Actually I never heard of a light coming on if front. Maybe in the UK or other overseas market it is required?

Looking at the wiring diagram you should have just the taillight and headlight. Dimmer switch will work like you described. But there is no other park light in the headlight itself on my diagram.

...Yes! My K1 has the 4W bulb and H4-->55/60W in the front too BUT I think in the U.S. You only need the taillight in the
P-position, or ?
12 or 14 Years ago I drove a FZR400, it was made for the U.S market and it only has the taillight on when I turned the key in the P-position.

On my 650 the only lite that comes on in the P position is the tail lite.  Yes the euro bike are required to have a seperate running headlamp but thats another story.  Sounds like the inspector is looking for things he dont know about to fail you on.

Yes, but the OP is in the UK. Therefore his bike should probably have it...

If the OP has a 750K produced for the Germany, England and European Direct market, the headlight will have an extra socket & bulb as seen in this parts diagram. Honda calls this a 'marker' bulb.
